The Verdict
Review after review we come to the same overall conclusion. The GeForce 6600 series offers astoundingly good value for your money.
Compared to the "normal" 6600 graphics cards the GT versions do fetch you a little bit more of a harmonizing experience. It's like having a little bit of reserve stashed away for the more heavy tasks and/or AA and AF settings and options. In the end the 6600 GT is the better product to buy in the mid-range segment of the graphics market as it is today, period.
When we forget about being a fantastic 2D capable graphics card and being a truly awesome media (movie) player these cards have to boil down towards performance versus the best feature set during gaming. Let's talk about that game performance, first Doom 3. At a screen resolution of 1024x768 you'll be able to play this new title at tight high quality settings with an average of 74 Frames per second, at 1600x1200 it still plays at 44FPS, that's just staggering!
Half-Life 2
for that matter at that same 10x7 resolution manages to squeeze out 85 FPS in a very Shader intensive part of the game, and hey 50 FPS with 4x AA and 8xAF enabled. Even Far Cry at the highest possible Image Quality setting did 55+ FPS. If that isn't value for you money then I'm missing something here.I do have one negative thing to say about it, although the cooler looks and works fantastic, it 's noise level can be irritating for some of you. Really, it's not a drama at all, it can be annoying for the ones who are into the more "silent" PC. It's one friggin' cool card to watch though as it really looks cool. Compared to nVIDIA's reference model clocks and thus performance are 100% equal. When we tweak the product we see some nice overclocking potential though, the 550 MHz core is good and boosting another 200 MHz out of its memory again will bring you an extra overall ~10% performance increase.
So in the end it comes to this, if you can't afford a high-end product or simply do not have the ambition to own one, then this card is a spectacular product to buy (or ask for Christmas ;). You'll be flabbergasted by the 3D Quality and overall performance.Two thumbs up, highly recommended, period.
