Final Words & Conclusion

Final Words & Conclusion

It’s time for the conclusion. Overall, the Hyte Y40 is a beautiful chassis, not more ominous than in Y60.

The build quality is excellent. The internal layout is typical, as it’s an ATX chassis. You get two fans, one 120 mm 1300 rpm at the bottom and the second one at the back, and its size is the same – 120 mm with 1300 rpm. You don’t get any built-in ARGB controller or fan controller, especially the last one would come in handy (due to the space for seven fans in total), but you get a PCIe 4.0 riser on the other side for the vertical mount of a graphics card.

Features

There’s enough space for up to 375 mm long GPUs, 180 mm tall CPU coolers, and 224 mm long PSUs (a significant result). You can install one 3.5” or two 2.5” drives. You can mount up to the ATX board here. Still – the size is enough for typical builds. Storage-wise, you’ll have a set of mounts for one 3.5” or two 2.5” drives, which can be not enough for some (but nowadays, there’s a trend of using the M.2 drives). The liquid cooling capacity is more than enough, and you can install a 280 mm rad on the side of the case (the total depth can be 120 mm), a 360 mm one at the top (but with 28 mm width), and a 120 mm one at the back. The I/O panel has a standard set of two USB 3.0 ports, USB 3.1 Type-C, an audio jack, and a power button (identical, so you can confuse them in the dark). The Labels on the rear are a good feature. You get the dust filter on all intake areas. There’s one unified motherboard cable plug, which makes the installation process faster. There’s a PCIe 4.0 riser included, which is not a standard in the competition’s offer. There’s more space to access the area with motherboards EPS sockets than in the other chassis we’ve checked. There is about 20 mm more distance (from the tempered glass side panel) for the GPUs to “breathe,” so a great option even for the RTX 4090.

Aesthetics

Looks are always a subjective matter. The design of the new Y40 is excellent and leaves nothing to be desired. It’s similar to the Y60 (but even more to the Lian Li O11 Dynamic series) but slightly less of a breakthrough design. There’s a lot of attention visible on the metal panels as well, as the paint quality is exceptional.

Performance

The temperatures are decent (but it's closer to the end of the pack than the beginning), thanks to the one fan at the bottom and one at the back. The noise levels are a bit above average (especially in idle it's ok). If you slow them down, they still should give a decent airflow and bring the noise to a comfortable area. Probably for the air-cooling configuration - adding two intake fans on the side would greatly help (and it's also a recommended setup by HYTE).

The Verdict

The Hyte Y40 is an ATX-compatible mid-tower chassis measuring 439 × 240 × 472 (L×W×H). It looks excellent also, thanks to a two-piece tempered glass panel and excellent build quality (for example, the paint on the steel panel is fantastic). You got two 120 mm (1300 rpm) fans, one at the bottom of the chassis and one at the back. There's an option to install a combo of 360+280+120 water cooling radiators (but these 360 at the top need to be very narrow). It would be appreciated if there would be like 10 mm more space. If you prefer air cooling – even the 180 mm products will fit (which is a remarkable improvement vs. 160 mm in Y60). As for the power supply – theoretically, it's 224 mm (so I think all used PSUs would work. Still, we'd try to have a max of 190 mm there, like the used Asus ROG 1000W unit). As for the storage options – you can mount only one 3.5" or two 2.5" drives. Only because not all have the M.2 units or want to upgrade from the SATA drives. But that's a matter of compromise. One unified motherboard cable plug makes the installation process faster (and the assembly process is easy). The final result looks very clean, also thanks to the plenty of zip-tie hooks placed internally and externally. There's more space to access the area with motherboards EPS sockets than in the other chassis we've checked. There is about 20 mm more distance (from the tempered glass side panel) for the GPUs to "breathe," so a great option even for the RTX 4090. From less-positive things - the 360 mm radiator compatibility at the top is questionable (it should be relatively narrow). Also – it would be good to have a 140 mm fan at the bottom in the default bundle, as there's a place for that size. The (two) provided 120 mm fans should be a 4-pin PWM type, not a 3-pin voltage controlled (1300 rpm). Not a severe drawback, but it's worth mentioning.
The chassis costs 149.99 USD, which is not cheap, but on the other side, for example, you get a PCIe 4.0 riser included, which is not a standard in the competition's offer and usually costs around 40-50 USD. In Hyte Y40, you also get great quality, excellent features (rarely or not seen in the competition offer), and excellent looks (although less impressive than Y60). So overall – the reviewed chassis has earned our "Recommended" award.
