Glorious Modular Mechanical Keyboard review - Features and Benefits

Why So Serious?

For awhile there I had thought that the mechanical keyboard had died, beaten to death by the cheap rubber dome, and the rise of the console and its simple controller. Only the hardcore gamer, serious typist, or truly pious mechanical keyboard fanatic, kept the flame alive. Thankfully, mechanical keyboards have exploded in the last several years. There’s even been some good innovation, new switches, RGB lighting, and more.

So what does make the GMMK different? Them swappable switches, man. The GMMK comes with Gateron Brown switches, which are fine for typing, but if you have a different personal preference, like soft as clouds Gateron Clears, or stiff Kaihl Blacks, obscene Cherry Greens, or something even more exotic, you can just swap them out. Before modular keyboards, if you bought a mechanical keyboard and didn’t like the switches, you’d be kind of screwed until you bought a different keyboard. The GMMK changes all that, you can change the typing feel of your keyboard just by swapping out the switches. Mix and match, if you want to, too.

Features and Benefits

The GMMK is a full-sized, 104 key, backlit, modular, mechanical keyboard. It is a very smartly designed keyboard, fit and trim, and none of the traditional fluff you might find on more glitzy competitors. It features an unbranded, caseless, floating keycap design, with replaceable MX-style key switches, doubleshot ABS backlight compatible keycaps, and backlighting in any color as long as it’s red.

There are some other nice touches, the black anodized aluminum top plate, red ‘artisan’ esc key, and a braided USB connector. For a version 1.0 product, the GMMK is really well done. It’s so well done, I’m actually a little suspicious. The 10+ months of development Glorious did on the GMMK shows. Everything is well thought out, every feature is there and in the box.
