Conclusion

It is pretty friggin awesome to see how game performance has advanced in roughly four years time. A few remarks come to mind though. With our stringent image quality settings you could say that the comparison is a little subjective with two cards pretty far away from each other. Lowering image quality would be the easiest thing to do ... and that would boost the overall game performance with the 9800 GT. At the other side of the spectrum you then can claim that you are not doing the GTX 660 any justice at all if we forfeit on image quality.

GeForce GTX 660

So that's up for debate -- overall though you can clearly see how much of a performance advancement there has been made in four years time with two mid-range and mainstream products. Back then the 9800 GT was hot stuffz, much like the GTX 660 now is.

Quite a bit has changed, excellent power consumption, the noise levels and the overall experience. A fact of truth is though that game quality overall didn't change heaps. Sure we have DX11 with tessellation right now and we can fire off much more complex shader code at the GPU. But the main and only focus these days seems to be performance -- the industry should IOHO be more innovative. Right now we see new products launch all the time with the only denominators being different to be price and performance. Then again, brute performance will get you better image quality and thus your game experience as well. if anything the performance differences have shown that in detail.

Regardless of that remark, it really is a no-brainer that a card like the GeForce GTX 660 would be a wise and interesting investment to make to get yourself up-to-date. If you are coming from that 9800 GT ... take it from the guru, it's time to upgrade buddy.
