Cougar Phontum Gaming Headset Review - Time for the tunes

TIMBERRRR!! We tip the chassis on its side now, to reveal the base. Four large rubber feet keep the case well elevated off the floor (good for those of you who have carpet floors, for sure). The full-length dust filter runs the full stretch of the case, and is removed by simply pulling on the front. This makes cleaning the thing easy and allows your PSU to breathe without fear of becoming choked. The mesh for your PSU is fairly standard in 2018. The full length and removable filter, however, isn't. A nice touch.

What about that front I/O? It's standard, and unchanged from the larger Meshify. I guess USB-C would have been a nice inclusion and a nod toward its greater adoption in 2017/18, but it's not there, so moving on. The I/O includes:

  • 2x USB 3.0.
  • Reset switch.
  • Headphone + Microphone jack.
  • Power button.

A word on that power button. The blue LED it lights up with is in keeping with Fractal Design's overall theme, so the color is appropriate. This is despite it potentially annoying those who want to 100% color match their build to the Nth degree. Some may gripe at the lack of any kind of fan controller here, and this was a complaint of ours back in the original Meshify C review. Again, one would have been nice, even if it were just a simple 'Off/Low/Medium/High' affair. I'll raise a minor point here, but the original case had a soft push circular button that - for me - would occasionally get stuck. Fractal has gone with a 'hard click' button this time around, and I prefer it.

Let us open her up, shall we? How's the space? Well, it's a Micro-ATX version of an already compact ATX mid-tower chassis, so - naturally - it's going to be small. That said, it is very 'open' in design, and cable management clearly is a priority, with solid rubber grommets allowing sufficient cable routing from in behind the motherboard tray. Whilst radiator support is strong, the top mounting points have a hard limit of 40mm for both radiator and fans. This should be an issue for most regular 240mm radiators, but it is certainly something to bear in mind.

GPUs of up to 315mm (31.5cm) can be used in the case, but beware (I touched on this earlier, but it is certainly worth re-iterating) this will be reduced if you decide to front mount your radiator. You certainly can front mount CPU radiators, as it has been shown to improve cooling (for relatively obvious reasons), but space restrictions must be taken into account. Measure your GPU, and subtract that from however thick your radiator/fan combo is. Simple.
