eVGA GeForce 7900 GTX Superclocked Edition reviewHey everyone ..  the havoc always starts when the CeBIT is getting closer and that's certainly the case this year. That's right today the CeBIT is starting and of course NVIDIA is launching some new products.

Let me quickly introduce them to you.

  • GeForce 7900 GTX - Dual slot cooled - 499 USD
  • GeForce 7900 GT -Single slot cooled - 299 USD
  • GeForce 7600 Single slot cooled - 199 USD

Yes .. we're going to be busy in the upcoming weeks ;)

We'll review these lovely gaming beasts of pleasure all one by one yet of course we need to start with the new flagship product that has been labeled GeForce 7900 GTX. Today we'll have a peek at the version from our good friends at eVGA, who in my opinion always produce a quality product.

It's a little more special than your "usual" flagship product though (if you can even name it usual) as this is the "Superclocked" version. Today we have a graphics card running at 690 MHz on the core and 1760 MHz (880x2 !!) on the memory.

Sounds fantastic eh ? But what will availability be like ? I mean .. sorry NVIDIA but the 7800 GTX 512 MB is a disaster to get. Availability is so low that prices went sky high. Could there have been yield problems causing the shortage of this particular card ?

Usually chip manufacturers like NVIDIA make an entire range of products based on the same chip. What happens? Yields. The success rate of the fabrication process, not everything on all chips on that wafer will work 100%, GPU's will have slight deficiencies.

My bet is that the 0,11 micron G70 GPU had a very small success rate and therefore NVIDIA could not deliver in the volume it wanted to. Looking at it from another perspective, NVIDIA had today's tested product in the works also, so it might be very well planned and stock simply ran out quicker than expected. We'll probably never know.

Today's tested GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB is available as we speak though. The stock keeping units are quite loaded with this product and for now it seems that the new product will be available in good volume. That's good because there's some magic happening ... pricing. It's been widely debated on the web and in our forums. Rumor was that the flagship products will drop in prices. And THANK GOD that is finally happening. Priced went sky-high. Initially the 7800 512MB GTX for example should have cost 649,- USD which in my opinion was a too large amount of money.

Today's product will carry a MSRP of 499 USD and with that amount we are finally back at a level that brings a huge smile to my face. What a really good move, and you know that the competition will have to follow .. it's as simple as that. Lowering the price on your flagship product will push down prices in the entire product line. Great news .. really great news.

Now then, let's get started with the review of eVGA's GeForce 7900 GTX. The new, better priced yet faster flagship product. We're going to make this card sweat for sure as we'll launch our entire benchmark suite at this graphics card to monitor it's performance at several image quality settings. Of course you'll see the usual technology overview, photoshoot, overclocking experiences and finally my verdict.

Bring it on ! Next page please.
