The musical side of HS70

The G4 PRO performs decent in music, especially taking into account that it’s a gaming headset. You can adjust the EQ by yourself, or choose one of the 12 pre-set profiles, so it’s relatively easy to find the right setting. I didn’t use the 7.1 mode as, in my opinion, it made the sound worse than in stereo. As for the testing suite, we used the following songs:

• Limp Bizkit – Boiler

• Missy Elliott - Get Ur Freak On

We listened to the tracks from lossless FLAC files, or on Spotify (320 kbps). As you can see, we covered a variety of genres. The G4 PRO makes the bass sound good (it’s a bit over-represented), whereas instruments sound quite naturally, and vocal reproduction is on a decent level. Low-end instruments, like the bass guitar and drums, were reproduced with satisfactory depth and fullness (but it’s not perfect by any means). Bass drum reproduction is clear, considering the price segment. Mid-range instrument sounds are quite warm by default. The soundstage and resolution are decent. Vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, and pianos came through relatively clearly. Resonance felt quite natural, especially for pianos and guitars. Midrange vocals lacked warmth, and there were some issues with reproduction of the higher end of the spectrum as well. It felt too sharp at times (occasionally much too sharp), but high-hat clashes and higher-range instruments still sounded pleasant. Edifier Gaming G4 PRO has a V-shaped sound characteristic (quite common among gaming headsets), with sufficient bass and treble combined with a less pronounced midrange. Audiophiles may prefer a more neutral sound, but if you are one, you are not the target segment for this headset. There is one visible (audible?) drawback - the headset lacks a smooth transition between bass and treble. However, after some EQ optimization, the sound definitely improves enough not to be so irritating. Overall, the G4 PRO provided a decently detailed sound. All of the audible frequencies were present and relatively clean. Transitions between them could have been smoother, but they were still acceptable. In music, instruments are not lost, but they may become harder to identify at times. Summing it up, this is not the perfect headset for listening to music; it does a rather average job.
