Video memory usage - Final Words & Conclusion

Graphics memory (VRAM) usage

So we have all these image quality modes and you would like to know how much graphics memory the game utilizes it versus your monitor resolution right ? Well, have a look at the chart below.

The results are based on our frametime tests, we have seen some scenes use a little more, so please take a 15% deviation into account. But at Full HD with good image quality settings you will hover at the 2GB marker graphics memory range in balanced mode, and when you flick on Best quality then your memory buffer will quickly rise to 3.5 GB. In WHQD 2560x1440 in Balanced mode we notice almost 2.5 GB of graphics memory usage with close to 4 GB when we flick on best quality including HBAO+.

Concluding

Overall Dying Light is a pretty fun game with some nice tweaks for the PC. There however is a price to pay, enable image quality settings to the max and even a 600 EURO graphics card can be brought down to its knees in certain scenes. We have seen massive fluctuations in frame rates. Especially cinematographic scenes with interaction cause huge dips in performance. At one point you'll see 90fps and then 10 seconds later your game can dip downward to 40fps. It made testing this game reliably enough on average FPS rather complicated, so please do keep some margin as to what you see on your end compared to our test-results. It is, I am afraid, the complexity of the Chrome game engine.

So please do tweak a little and find that level of equilibrium. Small tip, if you setup too much in quality and you exceed your frame buffer limitation, the scene load time will go up dramatically. Also the draw distance with Patch 1.2 has great impact and with our testing we maxed that out.  This is a good indicator that you passed your threshold. We recommend you to start with balanced mode, and from there on fine-tune and tweak your quality levels where it will match your graphics memory size and performance. Overall it is a pretty fun to play and good looking game though.

Hilbert out, peace.

Handy stuff at the end
