AMD FX 8370 versus Intel Core i7 5960X

AMD FX 8370 versus Intel Core i7 5960X

In the past we have seen AMD perform much worse due to lower per core (IPC) performance these processors deliver. In recent games though, the difference is becoming less marginal. As the latest optimized drivers and APIs like D3D12 help with CPU overhead, it can be cut off by a significant margin. As such we figured it'd be nice to compare in-between two eight-core processors (AMD FX8370 versus Intel Core i7 5960X) both clocked at 4.3 GHz. Both systems use the latest patched Windows 10, have 16GB of memory each. Quad channel for the Intel test setup at 2400 MHz, dual-channel 2133 MHz for the AMD one that is powered by a MSI 970 Gaming motherboard.

We'll take the Radeon RX 480 first. We have extrapolated the FPS. The upper chart shows all tested resolutions versus the Core i7 5960X and AMD FX 8370. Though both processors are clocked in the 4.3 GHz Turbo range, the AMD FX processor is half as fast per core.

As you can see we hit a major snag with the AMD FX / Radeon RX 480 combo. I am not sure if it is a game bug or not, but clearly that would suck if it would happen to you. Let's see if the GeForce GTX 1070 shows a similar pattern:

For the GeForce GTX 1070 we normal behaviour with bit of a perf drop for the AMD processor, but trivial at best. Again no worries here, the 200 USD processor plays just as well as the 1200 USD one does.
