Liquid Metal?

Hold on Hilbert -- did you just say Liquid Metal?

Yes Sir! Something new, something fresh, something cool. See, typically heatpipe based coolers are filled with a vaporizing fluid/gas; inside the Superleggera LMX cooler's heatpipes flows liquid metal, Sodium Potassium Alloy (aka NaK) to be precise.

According to Danamics it is a superb coolant for heat transfer. It is more thermally conductive than, say, water. Now last year when we first reported about these coolers, I mentioned that I do not like this material as it is potentially dangerous. The coolant is highly reactive to air and water -- a leak for example could result in an explosion. Now I must not scare you guys as really, the packaging is exceptional and I do not see any risk whatsoever. Here's Danamics take on it:

But what if the product leaks, one might ask? Well simply we don't believe it can. Only by mechanically damaging the product, this would be possible and even that scenario has been taken into account. If the metallic closed loop structure is cut open, only a small amount of NaK will surface. This will coagulate during oxidation which tends to plug the leek preventing additional NaK from leaking out. The coagulation process is actually started by contact with water - more precisely from the moist in our air. NaK exposed to the ambient air can be seen as a grey substance.

But yeah, it uses NaK which on its end is pumped around the nickel plated heatpipes with the help of an neodymium electromagnetic pump which is silent and features no moving parts. Huh, no moving parts? Yeah -- Moving parts are not need as an magnetic force is created within the particles of the liquid metal causing it to flow, when electrons move in the presence of a magnetic field it creates a force that acts in a direction perpendicular to theĀ field, propelling the liquid around the heat pipe circuit. Quite clever really.

Liquid metal and an electromagnetic pump... hmm what about all the electromagnetism going on close to all the electronics inside my PC? Well, Danamics fits the LMX CPU cooler with an iron core shielding around the pump at the top of the cooler to cut the EM radiation to a safe level. The downside; as a result the LMX weighs in at over one kilogram.
