The PSU is fully modular. So that puts away the discussion the native wired PSUs are more efficient to rest really. That's the last time I'll mention it. As you can see there are lot's and lots of connections. Even the ATX power header can be detached. See the button on the upper left  ? That's a self-test switch to determine fan functionality. Hold it down for a second and you can see the fan spinning. In the more expensive AX models the button has a self test though. The USB COM port is for LINK usage, you simply connect it towards your motherboard USB port after which you can control and monitor this PSU with the help of Corsair LINK software.

And yeah as you can see, a slightly longer product alright with a length of 18 cm - it's complete dimensions are 150mm x 86mm x 180mm. Well we assume that if you opt to purchase this beast, you won't have a small PC anyways. The Corsair HXi Series is built with all Japanese electrolytic capacitors to deliver clean, stable, continuous power, even at ambient temperatures as high as 50°C.

At the top you'll stumble into a big yet silent enough, 135 mm. A very silent ball bearing quality fan. When load is under 40% the fan will remain off meaning if load stays below roughly 300 Watts, the fan will disable itself. This is called Zero RPM Fan Mode and simply means that the fan doesn’t spin until the power supply is under heavy load. That new NR135P intake fan has blades specifically designed to move more air through the power supply components with less noise than conventional fans used in power supplies.

The NR135P fan is based on a fluid dynamic bearing design opposed to the traditional sleeve and ball bearing fans, regardless of orientation, yet is quieter than either solution. This bearing is also optimized for low RPMs by using an improved motor core and windings.

And check that out, that's a hint short from 63A on the single 12V rails alone. This PSU could hold two GeForce GTX 780 Ti cards or Radeon HD 290X cards quite easil. Considering a high-end graphics card eats roughly 15 Amps per card, the math here is easy.

All of the power supplies in the Corsair HXi Series have the necessary protection functions, even in extreme conditions. Below is a list of the included protections:

  • OCP: Over Current Protection. This function will latch the power supply off if any given rail is overloaded beyond a safe level. The +12V OCP on HXi product is set to 40A on each 8-pin modular connector (for PCIe and CPU power), 40A on the 24-pin and 40A for all of the 6-pin modular peripheral connectors combined. OCP on the 8-pin modular connectors can be toggled on/off using the Corsair Link software. 
  • OVP: Over Voltage Protection. This function will latch the power supply off if voltages exceed specification. 
  • UVP: Under Voltage Protection. This function will latch the power supply off if voltages drop below specification. 
  • SCP: Short Circuit Protection. This function will latch the power supply off in the event of a short. 
  • OTP: Over Temperature Protection. In the event that temperatures exceed a specified value, the power supply will latch off. 
  • OPP: Over Power Protection. If the total output power of the power supply exceeds a safe level, the power supply will latch off.
