VGA performance Recording Level and IQ settings

Graphics (VGA) performance Recording Level and IQ settings

Before we begin with the graphics performance tests a little explanation. We use a time based measurement based upon framerate recording. The test is a representative yet VERY stringent on the GPU. Our rather hefty settings are:

For all our graphics performance tests we apply the Quality settings as shown above (which pretty much are the best settings you can apply) though at 2xMSAA. Some mid-range card will struggle hard at these settings. But we choose the better image quality settings. So if that happens to you simply disable MSAA and you should be fairly fine, but we'll show you that over the next few pages. The graphics cards used in this specific article are:
  • GeForce GTX Titan
  • GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost
  • GeForce GTX 660
  • GeForce GTX 660 Ti
  • GeForce GTX 670
  • GeForce GTX 680
  • GeForce GTX 690
  • GeForce GTX 760
  • GeForce GTX 770
  • GeForce GTX 780
  • Radeon HD 6970
  • Radeon HD 7850
  • Radeon HD 7870
  • Radeon HD 7970
  • Radeon HD 7970 GHz
  • Radeon HD 7990
  • Radeon R9 260
  • Radeon R9 270X
  • Radeon R9 280X
  • Radeon R9 290
  • Radeon R9 290X

Our test system is based on a power hungry six-core Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition Sandy Bridge-E based setup on the X79 chipset platform. This setup is overclocked to 4.60 GHz on all cores. Next to that we have energy saving functions disabled for this motherboard and processor (to ensure consistent benchmark results). We use Windows 7 64-bit SP1 all patched up. Each card runs on the same PC with the same operating system clone.

  • GeForce cards use the latest 331.70  Beta driver.
  • AMD Radeon graphics cards we used the latest 13.11 Beta build 9 driver.
Both drivers still need to be released. Let's head onwards to the next page where we'll look at the three monitor resolutions in terms of relative performance versus these steep quality settings.
