The Verdict.

Well not only can BFG make quality graphics cards, they also can establish a reputable position in the PSU market.

From what I can tell this PSU is steady as a brick house, it's apparently actually silent for a 1KW PSU and comes with extended warranty. So that's all really great stuff. The BFGR1000WPSU is an outstanding power supply. We have been using it on one of our test systems for quite a while now.

psu-8-pin.jpgI'd like to make a generic note to PSU manufacturers now. Over the upcoming months we shall start to see graphics cards with a new sort of power-connector. The 6-pin (2x3) power connector as we all have learned to accept will inevitably be replaced with a 8-pin (2x4) power connector (pretty similar to the connector that's being used for dual-core CPUs). So especially with kilowatt PSU's it would be nice to have two of such connectors present on the 12 volts rail. Each 8-pin connector can feed up to 150 Watts of power. A good example is AMD-ATI's upcoming R600 graphics chipset which consumes 280 Watts of current. That card will have an 8-pin power connector. I also know that NVIDIA is recommending PS vendors to use 3x 8-pin connectors and 2x 6-pin connectors on high-end power supplies. However if you are worried that your future graphics card will have an 8-pin connector and you are stuck with 6 pin connectors, don't worry, as the graphics cards will be delivered with 2x4 to 2x3 adapter dongles.

Throughout our tests we were only able to measure really tiny fluctuations, with the PSU not being bothered at all. You know, there's a second yet very simple trick to monitor if your PSU is having a hard time dealing with the load. The cooling fan is monitoring heat in the PSU, it'll spin faster when temperature (and thus load) builds. It just didn't happen here though, neither did the PSU get warm. There's really nothing negative to say here. The one thing the PSU is not however is the fact that it's not modular. But a fact to weigh in is, modular plugs limit power by adding to electrical resistance. It does mean lot more wires though.

The one thing that is hard to swallow is the amount of money you have to pay for high-end PSU's. And although not exactly a small amount of money, I think the PSU is reasonably priced at roughly 275 USD. It's probably only a matter of time before these 1KW power supplies drop below the 200 USD marker for the sole reason that more and more manufacturers actually offer one and demand is certainly on the rise. At 275 USD right now it's actually among the cheapest if not the cheapest Kilowatt PSU available though, really nice.

Everything is going dual and quad these days and trust me when I say that you do not want the PSU to be the limiting factor. It's the petrol that fuels the car.

For that money you receive a good quality PSU with sleeved cables, high performance output and a very safe and protected environment wrapped up in a very silent package. Please do not hesitate on buying this PSU as everything about it is recommendable. Another great thing is that you receive a 10 year warranty in the EU and a life-time warranty in the USA.

Highly recommendable if you are building a high-end PC !
