GPU Performance

It is time to grab a number of cards and look per API on how the performance is. We'll start off with OpenGL 4.5, an API used less and less with the rise of DirectX 11/12 and Vulkan. So basically what we are doing here is running the very same test, just on a different API.

With NVIDIA dominating the enthusiast market, it's hard to compare really. We see a fairly good performance, however, let's move towards DirectX 12, remember this is the same workload, just rendered on a different API.

Performance jumps up significantly on the D3D12 API. But let's load up the last API we test, VULKAN.

You can clearly see the cards jump up further in performance when on Vulkan. Interestingly enough, the latest generation NVIDIA graphics card seems to go stronger on VULKAN where The last-gen Radeons seem to appreciate DX12. Is does carry a little bit here and there though.

Concluding

That's it for this quick writeup, starting today basemark GPU available to download and try. It is an easy to use application where you can measure GPU performance on multiple platforms. For Guru3D testing a smartphone or tablet on android is not that relevant, ergo we find the basemark GPU update more interesting for API testing. While it's a lot of results to digest, clearly VULKAN and D3D12 are the path to follow and keep an eye on. We might end up using Basemark GPU in graphics card test suite as it gives a really nice and quick comparison between APIs that you can test at home yourself as well.
