ASUS ROG Zenith X399 Extreme review -
Product Showcase
When we place the motherboard at an angle we see that all new socket TR4. It will support all Threadripper processors and is actually based on the sSP3 Epyc socket, this is referred to as the server class up-to 32 core processors (!). The cooler mounting system is the same for both.
Storage ports then -- ASUS is fitting the board with a shy 6x SATA3 ports. But then there is a U2 connector, real-estate that nobody is going using either really. See that ROG heatsink?
You can remove the top cover of the heatsink and then that's where your M2 slot is located. M2280 only as you can see, so the MS unit cannot be longer than 8cm.
The entire board has RGB LED lighting as we'll show you in some photos. All configurable with AURA SYNC of course. Right you noticed the ninth DIMM slot already right? Let's zoom in at the DIMMs for a second:
So there are two extra M.2 SSD slots available, one on each side of the ROG DIMM.2 daughter board. That daughter board (when you want to use it) this sits at that lowest (separated) DIMM slot. I know it is just weird to look at right?
Both support PCIe x4/x2 Gen 3.0. With two NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 M.2 connectors onboard, delivering up to 32 Gb/s data transfer speed per connector, the dual M.2 supports RAID modes though likely not bootable as OS drive. The memory DIMM slots, the board supports single, dual and quad channel with support for up-to DDR4 3600 (O.C.) and starts at 2133 MHz memory modules. 8 x DDR4 DIMM sockets can support up-to 128 GB of system memory with Threadripper processors.
ASUS also offers a nice Radeon RX 6750 XT 12GB, we review the beefed-up STRIX Gamign OC edition with proper cooling, low temps, and low acoustics. Well, that and a nice factory tweak as well of course...
