The Monitor

We received this XG49VQ series monitor merely a week or so ago. You can spot them in retail at a rather equally wide and massive € 1.099,- and 1049 USD. Yes, compared to ACER a notch more expensive. Asus prices an often a notch higher. Right, the box is slightly bigger than you'd expect it to be ;)

The XG49VQ series offers a rather sizable 49" display and is among the first of its kind to feature support DFHD (Double Full HD) effectively comprising two Full HD (1920x1080) screens in combination with HDR and 144 Hz. The VA panel used we think originates from AU Optronics. The panel is capable of recreating colors across over 125% an sRGB gamut and 90% DCI-P (the color gamut the film industry uses these days). We'll test that later in the article.

  • Panel Size 49” (124.46cm) Ultra-Wide Screen 32:9
  • Panel Type WLED/VA Display
  • Viewing Area 1195.8x336.3 mm True
  • Resolution 3840x1080 px
  • Refresh Rate 144 Hz
  • Pixel Pitch 0.311 mm
  • Display Colors 16.7 million
  • Color Saturation 125% sRGB
  • Brightness 450 cd/m2 (Typical)
  • Contrast Ratio 3,000:1
  • Viewing Angle (CR≧10) 178°(H)/178°(V)
  • Response Time 4 ms (Gray to Gray)

That power consumption at less than 47 Watts value is higher, but nothing to worry about with this 49" panel. We'll check that out more in-depth in our testing as really, it isn't that bad at all.

With NVIDIA now support Adaptive Sync and with AMD at FreeSync you should be good to go. HDR by itself should work with supported Radeon and GeForce cards. We do assume you've got the proper gear already. The monitor arrives in a large, full-color box. Included are cables (HDMI/DP/USB) and a manual.

So, a VA screen might not be a favorite type of panel for some, others not so much. However one cannot deny the fact that this one is capable of 144Hz, HDR and is wide, the advantages are clear for gamers.

The monitor has an acclaimed 4ms response time. Built with ABS plastic, the characteristic identity that ASUS offers means a trendy foot adorns this monitor. The display makes use of a ROG STRIX design and feel that clearly appeals to the target audience, PC gamers. There is a fairly large and thick plastic bezel though. The monitor includes HDMI 2.0 and a DisplayPort 1.2 connector as well as a USB 3.0

The foot is housed secure and sturdy, it offers a clean for the monitor. The monitor can be adjusted to different positions, that is a refined monitor arm that can easily move the screen without moving the foot. The screen is very easy to position in the ideal position. Blimey, that's wide ... stretching just over 120 cm.
