The Monitor

We received this ROG Strix XG27UQ series monitor merely a week or so ago. You can spot them in retail in the EMEA at 900 Euros with a close to a similar price level in USD.

The monitor offers a 27" display and is adaptive sync compatible in combination at 144 Hz. The AHVA (IPS type) panel used very likely originates from AU Optronics with LED backlight. The panel is capable of recreating colours across 90% DCI-P3, 125% sRGB (DCI-P3 is a colour gamut the film industry uses these days).

  • Size: 27in
  • Resolution: 3840x2160
  • Refresh Rate: 144Hz
  • Panel: AHVA
  • Response time: 1ms MPRT
  • DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0
  • Rated Brightness: 400 cd/m² HDR peak brightness
  • Contrast Ratio (static): 1000:1
  • Power Consumption: 90W Max

Quick note; if you're thinking of purchasing a GeForce graphics card compatible for GSYNC, please do be aware that it is Freesync compatible as well, so the monitor can handle both brands when it comes to its adaptive refresh rate. The monitor arrives in a large, full-colour box. Included are cables (HDMI/DP/USB) and a manual.

So, an AHVA screen might not be the favorite type of panel for some, others love it, and yes there's little more complicated than panel preference for the hardcore gaming community. However one cannot deny the fact that this one is capable of 144Hz, HDR400 and is Ultra HD at a 27" size, the advantages are clear, especially with adaptive sync in mind and that sheer screen size. For a 27-inch screen, the outside dimensions are generous with 63.4 x 43.7 to 55.7 x 27 cm (W x H x D). Inside the box are two large polystyrene parts that safely separate and fix the display, accessories, and stand. The display and stand are also in a soft foam bag.

The monitors is built with ABS plastic; the distinctive identity that ASUS offers means a trendy foot adorns this monitor. The display makes use of a ROG design and feel that appeals to the target audience, PC gamers, with a soft spot for ROG. There is a fairly large and thick plastic bezel, though. The monitor includes HDMI 2.0 and a DisplayPort 1.4 connector as well as a USB 3.0 hub. The housing of the monitor is made of anthracite-colored plastic. The surface is matt and has a grooved structure on the back of the case.

ASUS does not follow the prevailing trend of frameless design with the XG27UQ, but rather an approximately 2 cm wide frame runs around the display. A narrow frame is more comfortable for multi-screen operation. Of course, you'll notice that you have bought a ROG product, the ROG logo was placed at several points on the monitor. The logo placed on the lower display frame and embedded in it has a polished surface. The one on the back of the case also has a glossy surface but is also illuminated. The three-legged stand with red accents is also rather fashionable.
