At the lower edge of the ASUS X299 we see the headers, front panel connectors, and also two switches for power and reset as well as a safeboot and retry switch.

It's a labyrinth of features really. Some people, however, will miss the 4th PCIe slot. Then again in this day an age, who needs it really?

The ASUS X299 motherboard boasts an LED system in combination with their SYNC light App, RGB strips are now supported as well. Here you can see the dual 8-pin power headers. As you can see, the VRM area has active cooling, it is very silent I should add, something that has been rather different in the past with ASUS coolers.

So here we can spot the PCI-Express slots a bit better. These are configured as:

  • 3 x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots
    • Support x16/x0/x16/x8, x8/x8/x16/x8 mode with the 44-lane CPU.
    • Support x16/x0/x8/x4, x8/x8/x8/x4 mode with the 28-lane CPU.
    • Support x8/x0/x4/x4 mode with the 16-lane CPU.
  • 1 x PCIe 3.0 x4 slot

Again, your choice of processor will define how many PCI-Express lanes you'll get. 10 cores and more are offered with 44 PCIe lanes. Below you'll see the position of the OLED screen, it shows display/status codes and things like CPU temperature.
