ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme Encore review -
Overclocking
Overclocking on air
As always we tried to overclock the processor. It certainly is doable but proper liquid cooling is recommended. We got the processor stable at 4.6 GHz all-core with a vcore of 1.25 V. There was is for more if you apply better cooling (next paragraph).
This resulted in Cinebench in a score of 4423 points, which is an 18 percent higher score than the 3744 points that the processor reaches on stock settings. The heat production was considerable. This processor does have a soldered heatspreader, which in theory should ensure a much better heat transfer compared to thermal interface material.
One thing you do have to take into consideration is that once you overclock, the processor energy consumption jumps up swiftly and fast. But that is the same for any many-core processor.
Overclocking with liquid cooling
Since the processor reacts really well towards LCS cooling and manages temps overall quite efficiently we had to do a test run based on a 240mm LCS kit from Corsair as well. We got the processor towards 5.0 GHz all-core but that required a vcore of ... 1.45 V. This stage, however, was not stable enough to finish a Cinebench run. I increased voltage until I felt to comfortable move forward, even at 1.50 Volts CInebench would not finish. But with more time and patience, hey the potential certainly is there.
And yes you know what that means ...
Today we’re putting the new Asus ROG THOR 1000W PLATINUM II power supply on our test bench. The company is not so much known from their PSUs (as they’re rather associated with the motherboards, graphic cards, monitors, or peripherals). Still, we had a chance to check the first Thor at the end of 2018, when the 1200W version was reviewed (priced 329 EUR/USD), earning the “Best Hardware” award. Will the new version be as successful?
