The Monitor

So we received this monitor a while ago. The ASUS MG279Q Gaming monitor can be found under SKU product code MG279Q. Let me first state that the model we received is a final retail sample.

The new MG279Q offers a rather nice 27" display and was likely the first of its kind to feature support for AMD's new FreeSync adaptive refresh rate technology on a high refresh rate 144Hz edge lit IPS panel (16:9). Thanks to the 178-degree viewing angle of the In-Plane Switching (IPS) display which recreates colors across over 99 percent of the sRGB color space, there is little color distortion at any angle.

A quick note; if you're thinking of purchasing a FreeSync monitor then make sure your Radeon graphics card is compatible, basically anything newer than the AMD Radeon R9 295X2, 290X, R9 290, R9 285, R7 260X and R7 260 GPUs and newer cards will support dynamic refresh rates during gaming. APUs codenamed "Kaveri," "Kabini," "Temash," "Beema" and "Mullins" also feature the necessary hardware capabilities to enable dynamic refresh rates for video playback, gaming and power-saving purposes. We do assume you've got the proper gear already. The monitor arrives in a large, full colour box. Included are cables (HDMI/DP/Mini-DP) and a manual.

So, a IPS screen might not be our favorite type of panel for its slower speed compared to TN, but it is a way better looking display in terms of screen blacks. One nice advantage is that the monitor is 144Hz capable.

The monitor has an acclaimed 4ms GtG response time. Built with ABS plastic, the characteristic ASUS gaming identity with that trendy ROG foot adorns this monitor. The MG279Q uses an intricate design that clearly appeals to the target audience - you guys, the gamers. There is a fairly large and thick plastic bezel though. The monitor includes HDMI and DisplayPort connectors as well as a USB 3.0 HUB, which unfortunately is hard to reach. Built into the monitor are two small speakers with the same poor audio quality that any monitor offers really.

This is the foot, flipped around. In the middle that circle is a plate that can be rotated. You can EASILY rotate this monitor to any angle. I like that.
