Architecture and Specifications

The next gen compute engine (Vega NCU) offers 512 operations on 8-bits per clock and from there onwards halved with 256 16-bit ops per clock (for game rendering) and 128 32-bit ops per clock. The double precision rate is now actually configurable. AMD also stated that the NCU is optimized for higher clock speeds and higher values in instructions per cycle. We expect, and this value is unconfirmed, that Vega 10 will feature 4096 stream processors, spread across 64 NCUs with each NCU thus holding 64 streaming multiprocessors. AMD is making a nice claim in the upper slide there, "NCU is optimized for higher clock speeds", this could indicate that VEGA, much like Pascal, could reach high base and boost clock freqeuncies. That, however, remains speculation from my side. A new next generation pixel engine (output) has been designed to take memory efficiency to the next level. It includes a new rasterizer called the 'draw stream binning rasterizer'.

The render back ends are now the clients of L2 cache as well, and not just the L1 buffers. This should/could greatly help deferred shading, a screen-space shading technique. It is called "deferred" because no shading is actually performed in the first pass of the vertex and pixel shaders; instead shading is "deferred" until a second pass. By making the render back-end clients of the L2 cache they get access to large pools in a much bigger buffer, the direct effect this has is in the end to improve performance with applications that use deferred shading. So again, here we should see an efficiency and thus performance increase.

We see a powerful GPU with a colossal architectural update. The move towards HBM2-type memory will give it the fast low latency bandwidth it needs, the new high bandwidth cache controller will make that bandwidth a fact, yet also can branch out and link to your system memory, NVRAM yet also functions as an interface to many segments in that PC environment. All new is the programmable geometry pipeline, the CUs have received an update with programmable precision levels and finally the pixel engine got updated, the render back-end ties in to the L2 cache, again bringing performance enhancements.

The display engine sees a few updates as well, among others is multiple monitor support for 4K@60Hz as well as the addition of 4K@120Hz HDR. See the above table for the specifics.

Radeon RX Vega Packs

While you will be able to purchase all cards separately, AMD is also going to introduce bundles that can get you more discount. AMD is rolling out Radeon Packs in an effort to make it easier for people to upgrade to an enthusiast gaming experience, and thus they introduce hardware and software bundles you can opt for with your choice in graphics card.

Based on your purchase of a Radeon RX Vega graphics card, you can combine your purchase with a Radeon Pack. Radeon Packs include a $200 discount on the 34” Samsung CF791 curved Ultrawide FreeSync monitor, and a $100 discount on select Ryzen 7 processors and X370 motherboard combos -- $300 in combined hardware savings. They will also throw in $120 worth of new games (titles vary by region but think AMD supported titles like Prey and Wolfenstein II) which every purchaser of a Radeon Pack will receive. These discounts are applied at the time of purchase, and gamers can take or leave pieces as they see fit. So if you already have a great system and just want RX Vega, a new monitor and the games, you can do that. If you only want RX Vega and the free games, you can do that too.

Some examples, you could purchase a Radeon Black Pack Vega 64 aircooled (alone 499 USD) for 599,- but combined with the purchase of the 34” Samsung CF791 curved Ultrawide FreeSync monitor and a Ryzen 7 CPU, you can get $200 off the monitor and 100 USD off the Ryzen 7 processor. Plus you get two games bundled. So you just paid an extra 100 USD, but gained 300 USD in discounts and two free games. If you buy the Aqua Pack at 699 USD, you get the Vega 64 LCS with two games. Then the Red Pack bundle is an extra 100 USD for the Vega 56, but here again you can gain the discounts. AMD will offer more information on this soon at their website + details on how exactly they are planning to do this. Later on we do expect AMD to expand to other hardware deals as well, right now that 200 USD monitor discount only applies specifically to that incredibly expensive Samsung CF791 monitor.
