Hercules 3D Prophet II Ultra
GeForce2 Ultra 64MB

The Quest for Excessive Performance
By Hilbert Hagedoorn

Okay Guru's we have an exclusive on our hands here, the world premiere of the fastest GeForce2 available flavored ULTRA. It's truly amazing how NVIDIA is saturating the market at present with a videocard for basically any budget available. When we go to the stores we can find the cheap TNT videocard, the faster TNT2, true gamers go for a GeForce256 or GeForce 256 with DDR memory. If that isn't enough you can always buy the terrific GeForce2 MX. Serious gamers who don't mind spending some money of course go for a GeForce2 GTS. If that isn't fast enough for you then you'll be happy to know that there will be a PRO version available in weeks time, Yep that one is actually a standard GeForce2 GTS equipped with faster DDR memory. But what product is available for the ultimate gaming freak ? What is the fastest consumer videocard available ? Yes, the GeForce2 ULTRA is now available and we got our grubby little paws on it.

You are probably wondering if the GeForce2 Ultra was developed under the code name NV20 (which you probably heard about the last couple of weeks). The answer is no. The internal code name used at NVIDIA for the GeForce2 Ultra is the NV16. NV20 is scheduled for release somewhere in Q1 of 2001.

So what is the the ULTRA compared to a plain 'normal' GeForce2 GTS ? Basically three items:

  • Faster chipset Core
  • Faster DDR memory
  • Very expensive !

The 3D Prophet2 ULTRA is equipped with a new model Graphics Processing Unit. It's exactly the same as the GeForce2 GPU but it's running faster. The GeForce2 GTS runs at a default core frequency of 200 MHz, the Ultra has an astounding 250 MHz core frequency.
