AOpen - Aeolus GeForce4 Ti 4200

If you have two CRT monitors then get a 5 to 10 dollar gender changer and connect your second monitor to that DVI connector. You'll love it. Of course both cards are equipped with TV-OUT to bring al the 3D violence to the big screen. In a later section of this article we'll get deeper into that as DVD/DiVX slash movie playback over S-Video output really has improved over previous generations and definitely deserves some extra attention.

DVI to VGA gender changer

Let's take a look at memory bandwidth, quite important for the modern videocards.

The GeForce4 Ti 4200 has 64mb 4ns Samsung memory

The Ti4200 makes use of 4ns DDR memory chips. Let's get a little geekie as you don't always believe what the package is saying right ? There's a rather easy way to calculate everything you need to know, you just need to look at the memory chips and note the last numbers on the chip as it will state how fast they are. You notice that -4 at the chip above ? That's equal to 4ns:

Let's calculate the nominal speed for this memory:
1000:4ns x 2 (DDR) = 500 MHz

500 MHz ? Interesting as that is the same memory used as on faster memory clocked 64MB GeForce 4 Ti 4200 models ;)

Now that we have calculated nominal memory bandwidth and can see that the ram modules deliver the frequency that NVIDIA states we can raise the bar a step and calculate memory bandwidth:

(2x128bit) x (2:500MHz) : 8bit = 8000 MB/sec

Now I don't know about you but that is a rather sufficient level for a cheap videocard ;)
