Yandex getting popular, surpasses Bing

Posted by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 02/09/2013 08:49 AM | Source | 24 comment(s) ]

Search Engine Watch reports Yandex has surpassed Microsoft's Bing to become the 4th largest search engine. According to a comScore qSearch report, Yandex processed 4.844 billion queries in December 2012, whereas Microsoft sites did just 4.477 billion. Google is by far the largest search site with 114.73 billion search queries, representing a marketshare of 65.2 percent, while Chinese search firm Baidu follows at a distant second place with 14.5 billion (8.2 percent).

Yahoo ranks third with 8.63 billion (4.9 percent), but considering that Yahoo now uses Bing's search data the numbers look a little bit more rosy for Microsoft if you add Yahoo's search figures to those of Bing.

As you can see in the graph (Google purposely removed for context), Yandex began passing Microsoft in November, but the difference was tiny and initially it could have perceived looking like a statistical error.

There are only two out of Top-5 search entities which grew higher last year: Baidu (13 percent) and Yandex (27.8 percent) while the total number of search queries worldwide decreased by 4.6 percent since December 2011.

Exploring this deeper, reveals a few interesting data points. The audience growth continues to evolve and grow in Russia, however, global growth in Western markets where Microsoft has most of their share has slowed down.

Their are 2 things I really need from a search engine that I don't see in this one (only a quick look btw). I need to be able to limit my search by time, say up to 6 months or 3 months, last week etc. The other thing I find really handly is having a preview of the page on the right side like Google do.

Is it as difficult to remove from your rig as Silverlight is?

I like Google but hate how they change the page layout all the time. They removed ability to search within a certain timeframe which annoyed me.

I really only use google.
Last time I used something else was like altavista back in the 90s.

Google has added some very annoying things such as hidden features I used, but the most annoying thing of all hands down is that when I go to google.de for example, the search results are still in English, and if I click on the "Google.de offered in: Deutsch" then all google sites are in German and it's really troublesome to open the settings each time I just want a quick search for e.g. local Orange services or such (English results show stuff from the UK).

I hope they make google.com English only, and .de German only, much easier and intuitive but oh well. If it gets any worse I might start using Bing since it's integrated to WP anyway.
