Windows 8.x has marketshare of 9.30 percent

by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 12/04/2013 09:31 AM | Source | 40 comment(s)
Windows 8.x has marketshare of 9.30 percent

Net Market Share's reports on the marketshare of Windows 8.x basically flatlined in November. Windows 8 had a marketshare of 6.66 percent in November and Windows 8.1 stood at 2.64 percent, totaling 9.30 percent, a very small increment versus last month's 9.25 percent.

The operating system share has some surprises. Windows 8's market share wasn't growing explosively, but it was at least growing. The release of Windows 8.1—an operating system that's almost universally superior to Windows 8—should, if anything, have helped stimulate that growth. But that appears not to be the case. The total share between the two operating systems (8 and 8.1) was 9.25 percent in October. In November it had barely grown to 9.30 percent.

The contrast with OS X continues to be striking. OS X 10.9 went from 0.84 percent share in October to 2.42 percent in November. This is still behind Windows 8.1's 2.64 percent—but not by much.

Damn what if a big corporation like this would help with the suffering of famine in the world. Or any other big corporation for that matter... there's too little cooperation and unity in this world..

Bill Gates donated 28 billion to charity over the years and still has a net worth of 72 billion. So freakin' rich.

Bill Gates stepped down as CEO and officially turned the company over to Ballmer in January 2000. He's retained his position as chairman of the board since January 2000. Gates never "officially left" MS.

There are investors demanding that Gates be removed as Chairman, but since those investors only hold roughly 5% (combined) stake in MS, their demands are meaningless.

I knew he stepped down as CEO in 2000, but I thought he still had the final say until he was relatively inactive in recent years. I didn't know he hadn't parted with the company yet.

My question remains the same though, who's idea was all that strong-arming?

I use it and enjoy it by choice. Guess I'm the minority. There is nothing about it that bothers me other than Microsoft continuing to ignore minor features and details i'd like to see. Especially dealing with explorer navigation and stuff.

Pretty much this for me as well.

Honestly, Windows 7 was the most successful Microsoft OS of all time.
Any logical person would have continued to expand on what works, and not gone and try to re-invent the wheel.
Theres a reason why pure desktop environments have endured for decades and will continue to do so.

Windows 7 is successful because Microsoft commands a vast majority of the marketshare, Vista was a marketing failure and XP was around for nearly a decade. If it wasn't the most successful Microsoft OS it would literally go down as the worst blunder any company has ever made ever, there was literally no way they could **** that launch up.

As for expanding, yeah, tell that to companies like Blackberry, Kodak, Yahoo, Sun and all the other companies who sat on their golden thrones and failed to innovate. Worked out really well for them.

Pure desktop environments were the only choice for decades. This is literally like someone saying "automobiles are going to fail, horse and buggy reign supreme" four years after the initial car was developed. Mobiles already surpassed desktops in 2006. They now outsell desktop hardware 2-1. As the power of mobile computing gets better and network infrastructure improves there will be no reason to have a desktop. Just a tablet/phone and a dock.

Look I'm not going to pretend like the unified interface 8 employ's is flawless, it's not. But they definitely made the right bet. Desktops are going out the window and mobile is in. Every single person I talk to in the IT field here in the U.S. is basically already began shifting their customers over to more mobile oriented paradigms.

Desktops will take forever to disappear. Something called a workstation exists, and a mobile device is never going to be a proper replacement for that. Well, maybe not never, but certainly not any time soon.

There will always be work related hardware too powerful to make mobile so there will always be desktops. Even if it becomes the small minority in the future.

Only time mobile will replace desktops is when they manage to get cpu as powerful desktop i7 and gpu as powerful as the top dedicated gpu to fit in 1 chip that could fit in the tablet that wouldn't melt it or kill the battery instantly. Which isnt happen any time soon. Battery life suck on mobile devices, and it only gona get worse as time goes on. While tech get more power full and more power efficient , batteries for the most part have not they have long way to go.

Fixed. Windows XP was built on 2000 which was actually good. XP was a pile on release, although few people remember that.

Obviously they aren't going to vanish ever in their entirely, but the vast majority of users simply don't need the processing power in modern day computing. When I look at the company I work for, there is literally only three people out of about 120 that require something more powerful than what a modern mobile processor is capable of delivering. The only thing holding people back is the interface between them and the mobile unit -- docks/miracast/etc will improve and solve that problem.

Only time mobile will replace desktops is when they manage to get cpu as powerful desktop i7 and gpu as powerful as the top dedicated gpu to fit in 1 chip that could fit in the tablet that wouldn't melt it or kill the battery instantly. You're delusional if you think the majority of the market needs that. I would be surprised if even 5% of the people who own personal computers actually have that much processing power currently.

And again, this isn't a matter of if this will happen, it already has happened. Mobile outpace desktops 2-1. If Microsoft wants the Windows brand to stay relevant moving forward it needs to be on mobile.
