Windows 8 pricing Increased per February 1

Posted by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 01/21/2013 09:06 AM | 86 comment(s) ]

Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc shares the new Windows 8 pricing that will go into effect on February 1, 2013. Despite the poor adoption of the new operating system, Microsoft decided that the current cheap upgrade offer will not be extended beyond January 31st, 2013. After that date, you'll have to cough up $199.99 to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro, significantly more than the current $39.99.

Windows 8 upgrade editions will be priced as follows starting in February:

  • The Windows 8 Pro upgrade edition will be available online and at retail for $199.99 MSRP (U.S.).
  • The Windows 8 upgrade edition will be available online and at retail for $119.99 MSRP (U.S.).
  • The Windows 8 Pro Pack will cost $99.99 MSRP (U.S.).
  • The Windows 8 Media Center Pack will cost $9.99 MSRP (U.S.).

But we have our promotional offer available until January 31st 2013, you can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99 ERP* (U.S.) via Windows.com using the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant or pick up a DVD copy at a local retailer for just $69.99 ERP* (U.S.). If you bought an eligible Windows 7 PC between June 2nd and January 31st, 2013 – be sure to register for the Windows Upgrade Offer and upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for only $14.99 ERP*** (U.S.). If you upgrade to the Windows 8 edition or buy a PC with the Windows 8 edition pre-installed and want to move to the Windows 8 Pro edition– you can purchase the Windows 8 Pro Pack (previously known as Windows Anytime Upgrade) directly within Windows 8 by going to the Start screen and typing “Add Features to Windows 8” and at participating retailers for $69.99 MSRP (U.S.) until January 31st. If are running Windows 8 Pro and want Windows Media Center and DVD playback, you can add the Windows 8 Media Center Pack for free until January 31st**.

If you are building your own PC from scratch, looking to run Windows 8 in a Virtual Machine (VM), or looking to run Windows 8 on a second hard drive partition – you will want to purchase the Windows 8 edition or Windows 8 Pro edition OEM product known as “System Builder”. You can find these products online at local retailers.

I don't have a need for it. I'm perfectly fine using Windows 7 until is becomes EOL.

I paid $15 to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro which I have had no issues with, so it was a good deal.

Currently Windows 8 Pro is selling on Microsoft's website for $39.99.

Microsoft is increasing that price to 5 times what it is now and over 13 times what I paid for it... Increase the price astronomically great marketing strategy!

Under Microsoft's current policy retailers are able to sell boxed copies of Windows 7 until Oct. 26, 2013 and offer new PCs with Windows 7 installed until Oct. 26, 2014.

Once Windows 7 retail discs become rare I expect their price will also go up astronomically, which is what happened with Windows XP Pro several months after Vista launched.

If it didn't sell at the discounted price guess it won't sell at all at the new price

I'm also glad it's not compatible with our FAS 2020's and CIF shares, that means we won't be using it anytime soon in our school, hurrah!!

Windows 8 is hardly a "POS" and it's pretty ridiculous to claim so. Not liking aspects of the OS is understandible, but making false claims or just "hating" for the sake of it isn't very respectible. You of all people should know that, being a long time member (and a moderator.)
