Samsung Exec Bashes Windows 8

Posted by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 03/11/2013 05:31 AM | 59 comment(s) ]

A Samsung executive this week likened Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system to Vista, the criticized OS put out by Redmond several years ago in between its far more successful Windows XP and Windows 7 platforms. Jun Dong-soo, director of Samsung's memory chip business. Jun told the Korea Times this weekend that "Windows 8 has failed to boost demand for Windows-based computers," according to a review of the Korean-language article by Forbes.

"The global PC industry is steadily shrinking despite the launch of Windows 8. I think the Windows 8 system is no better than the previous Windows Vista platform," Jun reportedly told South Korean media, according to tech site Mobile & Apps.

The Samsung executive was particularly concerned with the lack of an uptick in memory chip sales in spite of the release of a new Windows operating system, traditionally a major event that helps to boost sales of new PCs. Jun cited "market research" that "indicates global PC shipments are on the decline" and singled out disappointing sales of ultrabooks—the fast-booting, thin-and-light notebooks championed by Intel—as particularly worrisome.

I'd have to agree with him. I tried Windows 8 & hated it, upgraded to Windows 7!

Same here... I've got my laptop and my PC running Win7 x64 and my older computer running XP x64. All good and smooth, no need to buy an (for me) almost unusable OS.

Before this turns south.

"This time around, with Windows 8, there is no such bloat," Worstall wrote, referring to resource-hogging software packed in with previous rollouts of Windows platforms. "You can actually run on the same specs as Windows 7. Indeed, many say that it runs better than the earlier OS on the same specification of rig. Thus there's been no mad rush to upgrade systems and install yet more RAM. Simply because Microsoft has, this time at least, written a fast and efficient OS."

Meaning, as far as hardware goes, the average person who bought a new Win7 machine a few years ago has no reason to buy a new Windows 8 machine. If anything, they'll just install Windows 8 on the machine they already have.

Samsung seems to be pissed they couldn't sell some more ram this OS round too if I read that right. They shouldn't worry, DDR4 is almost here.

It's not that I hate it, because I don't. I just don't have any need to upgrade.

Funny guy. Now we are all using W7 as the greatest OS of all times, and the truth is it has very few improvements over Vista. Almost all key technology was already in Vista and were just polished for W7. The same will happen again. W9 will be seen as great, even if it really is going to have mostly polished W8 features.

His say'd that from an economical point of view, and he is right, but the problem is that the smartphone and tablet take allot from PC sales.

Linking it to Vista, cool (Vista after the 1st SP was fantastic) - Windows 7 is just Windows Vista with an extra SP and renamed Windows 7 because the name "Vista" never recovered from all the unjust bad articles about it (even to this day).

On a serous note though, after reading the article I'd hardly say "Samsung Exec Bashes Windows 8", he seems to just talk about the lack of uptake and I can't actually see anything I'd refer to as actual bashing.

Speak for yourself, it can take up to 6 clicks to shut down Windows 8 without any programs running. Windows 7 can be as little as 2.

6 clicks?, how do you mange that in Windows 8?, the most it takes is 3 clicks - hover over charms (same as hover over start button) - click settings, click power, click shutdown.

In my case it takes 1 - click shutdown tile ( :D).

My experience was from the beta, but IIRC, it would take that many clicks if you were at the start screen. Also, I consider a hover to be a click since it does the same thing but takes longer.

Wtf .. I wasn't talking about the number of clicks to initiate the process.

I'll be sticking with 7. Vista was useable with one tweak (UAC), but 8 I cannot stand.

A hover is a click now?. So I ask, are you adding your hover over start button to your 2 clicks? (it takes me the same time to hover over start as it does to show the charms bar).

Basically you've just made it 1 click extra for each of use, 3 clicks for Win 7 and 4 clicks for Win 8.

Anyways, let's be honest - this is kinda irrelevant and will just go round in circles - so lets agree to disagree.
