Plextor M5 Pro SSD gets tested and a review

Posted by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 11/26/2012 09:12 AM | 8 comment(s) ]

In this article we test, benchmark and review the Plextor M5 Pro series SSD. Plextor has developed this product alongside a marvel controller tied to 256GB of NAND flash memory it is amongst the fastest drives we have ever tested. We sure have lots to talk about alright. The 256GB models have sutained read/write levels of 540 MB/sec and 450 MB/sec respectively.

And with 4K random write performance estimated at 86,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) it's dressed to impress alright. Have a peek, after which we'll dive into the technology behind it and obviously we'll present you a nice phat performance overview.

Hilbert, according to the AS SSD screenie your unit has firmware 1.02!

I bought this unit over a month ago and it came with f/w 1.01 and I just looked for 1.02 on Plextor Digitals site but they only have 1.01!! Is that firmware available or is this a case of special treatment just for the review :)

Pretty quick, but damn expensive.
I have to choose a new SSD for Christmas, they have well and truly priced themselves out.

For the 256GB version, I wonder if those 260Euros include UK VAT at 20% ?!
For £150 inc vat, I can have a Vertex 4 256GB for example.

Hilbert maybe you could help I bought mine over 2 months ago and on their support forum they are very reluctant to answer/help much. My post over there yesterday is still unanswered. Any help I would be greatful for. Thanks

Just wondering if the release notes for 1.02 are available as well? Just because 1.02 is 'out there' doesn't mean we actually need it unless it fixes some nasty bug!!

1.0 was initial release
1.01 was so Plextool could be used
1.02 was submitted for the review for some reason, not to look bad I imagine

OCz have just released the Vector, its as quick as the Samsung 840 pro and is a bit cheaper than the Plextor.
Beyond my budget still, but a step in the right direction.
If they have an xmas sale...

Lol, if you kept waiting to see if anything better comes out a few weeks later you'd never buy anything!!

I'm hamstrung with my M5 Pro because i'm only on SATAII, but it's still quicker than my HDD's. Might upgrade to a 2011 board next year when prices come down a bit.
