NVIDIA GPU marketshare increases as AMD and Intel drop

Posted by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 11/27/2012 09:34 AM | 60 comment(s) ]

Jon Peddie Research published its Q3 2012 graphics chip report. The research firm found that NVIDIA gained 3.7% to 18.5% versus the second quarter, while AMD fell 1.5 percent to 21.2 percent and Intel dropped 2.4 percent to 59.8 percent. Full details after the break.

was terrific for Nvidia and disappointing for everyone the other major players. From Q2 to Q3 Intel slipped in both desktop (7%) and notebook (8.6%). AMD dropped (2%) in the desktop, and (17%) in notebooks. Nvidia gained 28.3% in desktop from quarter to quarter and jumped almost 12% in the notebook segment.

This was a not a very good quarter. The shipments were down -1.45% on a Qtr-Qtr basis, and -10.8% on a Yr-Yr basis. We found that graphics shipments during Q3’12 slipped from last quarter -1.5% as compared to PCs which grew slightly by 0.9% overall (however more GPU’s shipped than PCs due to double attach). GPUs are traditionally a leading indicator of the market, since a GPU goes into every system before it is shipped and most of the PC vendors are guiding down for Q4.

The turmoil in the PC market has caused us to modify our forecast since the last report; it is less aggressive on both desktops and notebooks. The popularity of tablets and the persistent recession are the contributing factors that have altered the nature of the PC market. Nonetheless, the CAGR for PC graphics from 2011 to 2016 is 3.6%, and we expect the total shipments of graphics chips in 2016 to be 608 million units.

The ten-year average change for this quarter is a growth of 7.9%. This quarter is below the average with a 4.6% decrease.

Our findings include discrete and integrated graphics (CPU and chipset) for Desktops, Notebooks (and Netbooks), and PC-based commercial (i.e., POS) and industrial/scientific and embedded. This report does not include handhelds (i.e., mobile phones), x86 Servers or ARM-based Tablets (i.e. iPad and Android-based Tablets), Smartbooks, or ARM-based Servers. It does include x86-based tablets.

The quarter in general

AMD’s quarter-to-quarter total shipments of desktop heterogeneous GPU/CPUs, i.e., APUs dropped 30% from Q2 and 4.7% in notebooks. The company’s overall PC graphics shipments slipped 10.7%.

Intel’s quarter-to-quarter desktop processor-graphics EPG shipments dropped from last quarter by 7%, and Notebooks fell by 8.6%. The company’s overall PC graphics shipments dropped 8%.

Nvidia’s quarter-to-quarter desktop discrete shipments jumped 28.3% from last quarter; and, the company’s mobile discrete shipments were up 12%, which is impressive in a down market. The company’s overall PC graphics shipments increased 19.6%. Year to year this quarter AMD shipments declined 20%, Intel dropped 14%, Nvidia slipped 0.5%, and VIA fell 10% from last year.

Total discrete GPUs (desktop and notebook) increased a modest 4.6% from the last quarter and were down 5.2% from last year for the same quarter due to the same problems plaguing the overall PC industry. Overall the trend for discrete GPUs is up with a CAGR to 2016 of 2.6%.

Ninety nine percent of Intel’s non-server processors have graphics, and over 67% of AMD’s non-server processors contain integrated graphics; AMD still ships IGPs.

Year to year for the quarter the graphics market decreased. Shipments were down 20 million units from this quarter last year.

Market shares shifted for the big three, and put pressure on the smaller two, market share in shipments as indicated in Table 1 (units are in millions.)

AMD saw a change of -7.7% in total graphics market share from last year, and -1.5% quarter to quarter.

Intel’s market share increased 0.9% from last year, and -2.4% from last quarter.

Nvidia showed an increase in market share of almost 15% in overall market share from last year rising to 19% from 16% last year.

Graphics chips (GPUs) and chips with graphics (IGPs, APUs, and EPGs) are a leading indicator for the PC market. At least one and often two GPUs are present in every PC shipped. It can take the form of a discrete chip, a GPU integrated in the chipset or embedded in the CPU. The average has grown from 1.2 GPUs per PC in 2001 to almost 1.4 GPUs per PC.

I like it lol amd position right now is shetty if they did go down hill im sure jenson huang wont hesistate to buy amd just like they did on AGEA physx. look at this way their cpu deparment jsut cant compete with intel, there gpu deparment is gettin whoop by nvidia and consumers dont like shetty gpus and the numbers dont lie nvidia is owning them in market when it comes to high performance gpu's

According to market share...AMD is ahead of NVidia.

AMD 21.2%
NVidia 18.5%

The only way that changes, is if you focus strictly on dedicated cards, which skews the fact that NVidia has the smallest market share of the 3 major vendors.

Also, NVidia and AMD being the only dedicated graphics vendors with any appreciable market share....the 2 will never merge in any form. It would create a monopoly on dedicated graphics.

And consoles.....? Consoles can die.

I don't know how many years ago I announced it, but my plans haven't changed, when consoles die there will be a big party at my house and everyone's invited.

That's nothing but rhetoric and has no place in what has been up til now an intelligent discussion.

Yes, it makes sense that this quarter Nvidia gains share at the expense of the other two; all the illogical nancies that think Nvidia is just 'better' are buying the midrange cards Nvidia released Q3.

If you look tho, AMD is ahead of Nvidia like someone just said. The perception of Nvidia being better still lingers, but I see AMD subtly owning more of the desktop market whether APUs/Ded. and the consoles while Nvidia loses some on desktop but owns more on mobile.

/FIXED

When was the last time you heard NV/AMD quoting consoles in their income statement?

Ya, that is how that particular stream is relevant in their financials.
Actually it's very relevant...

One bright area for AMD will almost certainly arise from the next generation of gaming consoles. The company should derive steady and on-going income from processors (or APUs) for some time given the lifecycle of consoles. Theoretically this would also entail a boost for AMD’s graphics since there should be some considerable knock-on effect as console and PC gaming convergence becomes more of a reality.http://www.techspot.com/article/599-amd-rise-and-fall/page3.html

That's the main reason people should buy AMD: so that they don't go out of business. I don't want to even imagine a market where only Intel and nVidia compete for CPU and GPU.

That's no reason at all

by the way let say why I bought nVIDIA .
This year I needed a laptop and choose nVIDIA , the main factor that compelled me to this route was Optimus , honestly AMD answer to Optimus as best is immature and need some serious reworking.

Well AMD's Dual Graphics technology is relatively new, while Nvidia has had plenty of time to develop Optimus after the Hybrid SLI disaster.

I think as the trend move more toward low power market and tablets it would have been more realistic if they added ARM market to this comparison .

and by the way wonder if consider the PowerVR GPU in newer atom line up as intel market share r totally omit it

Possibly, desktop PC use is declining daily while tablet usage is increasing.

Not sure why it’s so important to some to laugh at AMD struggling, it doesn't benefit Nvidia users, if anything it could make things worse for them when it comes to things like tech and pricing.

As for consoles dying out, zero chance of that, they will only get stronger with every new gen.

Good news for me though, as i think i will be stepping away from PC gaming in the next few years.
PC gaming is a predominately aimed at young people in the teens and early twenties, or older people with lots of free time and i'm neither of those groups.

My prophesy may yet come to pass...

Now you're just sounding like a conspiracy theorists.

Anyhoo, since Nvidia has the strongest market share in the "tablet" department it all makes perfect sense...

Not sure why it’s so important to some to laugh at AMD struggling, it It's almost sad...some people who sn_igger at AMD's misfortunes don't realize that it's literally a David vs Goliath match up., and always has been.

Historically Intel has had almost unlimited resources and cash to put into R&D, and marketing...(or paying off Dell) whatever they want.

AMD on the other hand often faced an uphill battle since it was founded, just a small company - tiny - compared to the Intel giant, and it's remarkable they even came this far.
For staters AMD engineers had to reverse engineer Intel tech to even get a start (before the IBM deal). Intel has never played nicely.

The GPU side may well be a lifesaver for AMD even though the ATI purchase was a financial disaster at the time.

Just saying.....

It's easy to get behind a David when it's one entity, but AMD has been like 3 different companies in the last 10 years or so.

First you have CEO Hector Ruiz who took the work Jerry Sander (AMD's Founder -- was in charge when x64 was making AMD money and marketshare hand over fist) and ran it into the ground with the stupid purchase of ATI. Which was worth like one third of what it was when AMD bought it a year after purchase, now it's even less than that. Then you have Dirk Meyer who seemed to be actually turning things around for the most part, under him AMD's graphics department actually started making half decent products (4xxx-7xxx) but then they launched bulldozer which was bad so their board basically forced him out. Then they also layed off Carrell Killebrew and Rick Bergman the two guys behind the success of AMD's graphics department (the guys Anandtech interviewed -- great read) Now you have the new guy, who has done nothing so far.

So who exactly am I supposed to support here? Where is the David? Sounds like a poorly managed company to me.

Yep, you would think they had shares in one company or something.
These days i just prefer Intel/Nvidia, i don't hate AMD, never have.

I use to only use AMD/ATI hardware , partly due to price, but mostly to support the underdog as at the time stuff like that was important to me, It didn't hurt that at the time AMD CPU's were very good, especially for what i needed them for.

Unfortunately things stagnated for a bit, and several years ago Intel brought out the E6750 and Nvidia the 8800GT, with both offering fantastic performance, as well as a very reasonable price.

I'd love to switch back to AMD, well GPU wise anyway, but due to extra commitments these days i don't have the spare cash i used to, and it's a worry that i might spend money on something i'm not 100% comfortable with, so it's safer to stick with what i know.

Saying that i am looking forward to what AMD and the New Year brings.

Yeah sure, there's no denying that AMD did a lot of damage to themselves....mismanagement, the ATI takeover disaster, ditching GF....
I was just trying to put things a little more into perspective....
