NVIDIA GPU marketshare increases as AMD and Intel drop

Jon Peddie Research published its Q3 2012 graphics chip report. The research firm found that NVIDIA gained 3.7% to 18.5% versus the second quarter, while AMD fell 1.5 percent to 21.2 percent and Intel dropped 2.4 percent to 59.8 percent. Full details after the break.
was terrific for Nvidia and disappointing for everyone the other major players. From Q2 to Q3 Intel slipped in both desktop (7%) and notebook (8.6%). AMD dropped (2%) in the desktop, and (17%) in notebooks. Nvidia gained 28.3% in desktop from quarter to quarter and jumped almost 12% in the notebook segment.
This was a not a very good quarter. The shipments were down -1.45% on a Qtr-Qtr basis, and -10.8% on a Yr-Yr basis. We found that graphics shipments during Q3’12 slipped from last quarter -1.5% as compared to PCs which grew slightly by 0.9% overall (however more GPU’s shipped than PCs due to double attach). GPUs are traditionally a leading indicator of the market, since a GPU goes into every system before it is shipped and most of the PC vendors are guiding down for Q4.
The turmoil in the PC market has caused us to modify our forecast since the last report; it is less aggressive on both desktops and notebooks. The popularity of tablets and the persistent recession are the contributing factors that have altered the nature of the PC market. Nonetheless, the CAGR for PC graphics from 2011 to 2016 is 3.6%, and we expect the total shipments of graphics chips in 2016 to be 608 million units.
The ten-year average change for this quarter is a growth of 7.9%. This quarter is below the average with a 4.6% decrease.
Our findings include discrete and integrated graphics (CPU and chipset) for Desktops, Notebooks (and Netbooks), and PC-based commercial (i.e., POS) and industrial/scientific and embedded. This report does not include handhelds (i.e., mobile phones), x86 Servers or ARM-based Tablets (i.e. iPad and Android-based Tablets), Smartbooks, or ARM-based Servers. It does include x86-based tablets.
The quarter in general
AMD’s quarter-to-quarter total shipments of desktop heterogeneous GPU/CPUs, i.e., APUs dropped 30% from Q2 and 4.7% in notebooks. The company’s overall PC graphics shipments slipped 10.7%.
Intel’s quarter-to-quarter desktop processor-graphics EPG shipments dropped from last quarter by 7%, and Notebooks fell by 8.6%. The company’s overall PC graphics shipments dropped 8%.
Nvidia’s quarter-to-quarter desktop discrete shipments jumped 28.3% from last quarter; and, the company’s mobile discrete shipments were up 12%, which is impressive in a down market. The company’s overall PC graphics shipments increased 19.6%. Year to year this quarter AMD shipments declined 20%, Intel dropped 14%, Nvidia slipped 0.5%, and VIA fell 10% from last year.
Total discrete GPUs (desktop and notebook) increased a modest 4.6% from the last quarter and were down 5.2% from last year for the same quarter due to the same problems plaguing the overall PC industry. Overall the trend for discrete GPUs is up with a CAGR to 2016 of 2.6%.
Ninety nine percent of Intel’s non-server processors have graphics, and over 67% of AMD’s non-server processors contain integrated graphics; AMD still ships IGPs.
Year to year for the quarter the graphics market decreased. Shipments were down 20 million units from this quarter last year.
Market shares shifted for the big three, and put pressure on the smaller two, market share in shipments as indicated in Table 1 (units are in millions.)
AMD saw a change of -7.7% in total graphics market share from last year, and -1.5% quarter to quarter.
Intel’s market share increased 0.9% from last year, and -2.4% from last quarter.
Nvidia showed an increase in market share of almost 15% in overall market share from last year rising to 19% from 16% last year.
Graphics chips (GPUs) and chips with graphics (IGPs, APUs, and EPGs) are a leading indicator for the PC market. At least one and often two GPUs are present in every PC shipped. It can take the form of a discrete chip, a GPU integrated in the chipset or embedded in the CPU. The average has grown from 1.2 GPUs per PC in 2001 to almost 1.4 GPUs per PC.

Broken Aero is one possible reason for screen tear on the desktop, which i suppose could be driver related.
It's actually a shame AMD are losing market share as these days they are making a great effort with working with developers.
A few years ago it was the main criticism i had about them, it's certainly made me consider switching back, but maybe other people would rather cheaper GPU's and less support.

AMD will likely have chips in all the consoles which should bring in some cash, what they need to do is just restructure before they get too far in debt.

This is an article I read on Techspot earlier...gives an overview of AMD's history...doesn't go into too much detail but some may find it interesting.

@pill I am not going to be drawn into some pointless discussion especially when you arent reading everything I said. (re the cpu bit).
one of the main reasons I wont go red is their poor performance re total wars even though last one was "gaming evolved".

117 pages, not quite as bad as career mode for fifa13 which is currently fubared across all three platforms
p.s and am sure you can list problems for nvidia cards as well. my point being I am not just making up AMD driver issues for the want of an excuse to not buy their gpus...

Besides, how do you know it's even driver related? It could be the game itself or any number of things......
Either way you're assuming it's drivers when really you have no grounds to, which is how FUD gets spread around.
There are plenty of AMD owners who don't have any issues...not just me..

ok. right to save us going back and forth I have a solution! I will keep stum about AMD and drivers until I test for myself next gen.
I did say this before but will stop us bickering! It's probably actually fair considering last cards I had were 5870's.
P.S you're paying the shipping and packaging if its a disaster and i have to send it back
p.p.s my get out clause if it's anything like the 480 was (no offence 480 owners) it's a no-no.

^Sounds reasonable.

Edit-
I should add that AMD has had some lousy CrossFire support, maybe that's where the bad rep comes from..

AMD will NOT got out of business at all. People have to realize that they simply are not as big as they used to be. Intel have so much money from other companies paying them money for the x86 licenses and other such things that AMD simply can not compete when it comes to R&D for newer tech.
You have to admit though that their bang per buck/pound/euro etc is excellent. You can get an 8 core CPU for under £200 which is simply absurd and whilst the performance is not on par with Intel the performance is still no slouch by any means. Their APU range and performance is growing dramatically and also the prices are excellent as well. You can build a full system based around an APU that will play mild games @ 720p medium settings for less than £300. Ten years ago this was considered a gamers wet dream.
Also if rumoured specs are to believed then the next gen consoles will be going with a complete AMD system. The PS4 "Orbis" is apparently going to use an AMD APU and an AMD discrete GPU to power the system. If Microsoft go the same route with the 720 and we already know the Wii U uses an AMD GPU as well. They literally have the console market in the palm of their hands. Which will bring in a massive stream of revenue.
Plus their graphics division is still going VERY strong. The 2k series was a massive let down, the 3k series was a step in the right direction and the 4k, and 5k series were amazing. The 6k series was excellent for the price and the new GCN architecture in the 7k series is a massive improvement over the last architecture when it comes to efficiency and power. Plus they have sorted out A LOT of their drivers issues with the new "Never Settle" campaign by actually actively supporting new games that are released with top notch performance and free game giveaways. I got Deus Ex, Neuix, and Dirt Showdown codes with my 7970 and my 2nd I got the Never Settle bundle Hitman, Farcry 3, and another game code too (cant remember which one) so I am set for games to play and feel like my £300 on each card was well worth it as I got nearly £200 worth of games for free! Beat that Nvidia!

Feel the same way, safe to say though I've waited too long
Hoping we see a full Kepler chip available in the Geforce segment.
Still more interested in Maxwell though.

the only reason i am gonna not take amd again is tearing that all amd cards have on windows desktop, login etc...
nvidia on same system was smooth...
and the unstoppable vsync with ogl in wc3 (dota 1)... it ruins many peoples experience with that double kill.........
and the most annoying is that amd have knowledge about these problems and they answered they cannot fix it......
I'm on my 3rd AMD card in a row and I have no idea what you're on about.....how would screen tearing even be possible on the desktop?
