Microsoft to retire Windows Live Messenger in favor of Skype
Microsoft is working towards retiring its Windows Live Messenger client in favor of Skype. The Verge has learned through several sources that Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger service will be retired in the coming months and integrated into Skype. Microsoft has slowly been moving people over to the Messenger backend for Skype over the past few months, with around 80 percent of all IMs sent on Skype being handled by Messenger.
The company will announce the retirement of Windows Live Messenger soon, possibly as early as this week according to sources. The move follows efforts by Skype to link Microsoft accounts to Skype login names ahead of its global retirement plan for Windows Live Messenger. Users of Skype 6.0 for Mac and Windows are now greeted with options to log in using a Microsoft or Facebook account. The Verge reached out to Microsoft for comment on the retirement, we'll update you accordingly.

Trillian is good as well, I'ved used it for a few years, cross platform and supports loads of IM's in one client. I've not signed into WLM for a year or two now though, everyone I know switched to FB chat.

when i want to chat with someone important, WLM is the app to go, you can play games with them, share photos/videos in real time, custom emoticons and gifs avatars etc, skype is just a voIP bs with the most ugly/idiotized UI i've ever seen, looks like something for a 3yo kid, sigh' ms should rethink it, why not integrate skype into msn instead? what offers skype that msn doesnt? at first people came at me asking me if i had a skype account, why?, they said videocalls... oh really? im making video calls since what? 2004? with msn of course, and now this bs so i tried it and woaah it was a voIP client with free videocalls, lame IM capabilities, so.. how on earth they want us civilized people to use this lame IM client instead of what im using since i was a kid playing flash games? well M$, what makes you think i want every account of mine merged into one big **** that doesnt necessarily looks how i want it to look, if i wanted to do that, there is ebuddy and lots of apps that supports tons of IM services
