Kingston gold-plated Data Traveler GE9 flash drives

Posted by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 11/24/2012 10:34 AM | 0 comment(s) ]

Goooooold, Kingston announced the Data Traveller GE9, a new line of USB 2.0 thumb drives with 24-carat gold plating. The drives are available in capacities of 8GB and 16GB, with pricing of $8 and $14, respectively. While they appear to look very pretty, the specifications are pretty poor.

Asian tech site Expreview tested the drives and found they deliver a read speed of only 19.15MB/s and a write speed of a mere 5.14MB/s. It's a lot slower than the fastest USB 3.0 drives, and even for a USB 2.0 drive it's very slow.
