Huawei Ascend D1 quad XL smartphone released

Posted by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 10/06/2012 05:56 AM | 4 comment(s) ]

The Huawei's Ascend D1 Quad XL smartphone will start shipping in the Benelux in November for 499EUR. This new Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" based smartphone features the Huawei K3V2 quad-core 1.4GHz CPU, a 4.5" screen with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, a 2600mAh battery, Dolby Mobile 3.0 Plus with Audience earSmart sound processor, a 8MP digicam with 1080p Full HD video recording, a 1.3MP front camera, 8GB internal flash memory, and microSD memory card slot.

In a move designed to help Huawei stand out against companies such as Samsung and HTC, the company has also announced a new skin that will sit on top of Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS called the Emotion UI.

"Reinforcing Huawei’s user-centric design philosophy, 'Design with Empathy', Emotion UI is built on a clear understanding of how consumers interact with their smartphones and what they expect from these interactions," says Huawei on the announcement.

According to the Chinese company, the Emotion UI improves usability and provides a much simpler navigational experience for users.

The phone is available in carbon black and promises 15 hours of calling and a standby time of up to 500 hours. It weighs 145g, is 64.9mm width and just 11.5mm thick.

But it will cost about as much as a Samsung Galaxy S3 does here on its release, and many users will prefer to buy a brand they know.

The phone makers are getting close to a perfect phone but they still aren't listening. I'd assume that the devs aren't gonna support that phone since it doesn't have a mainstream processor. I could be wrong though. I'm still waiting for a ~4.5" lcd, quad core, 2GB ram, removable battery over 3000mah, sd card slot. Sometimes it feels like it'll never come.

What caught my attention is the supposed 2600mAh battery. It's about time the bar was raised a little considering Samsung left it at the floor. My phone only came with a 1750mAh one... which measured in at 1450mAh when I used a tool to test it. I'm using a battery now that's literally double the size of the stock one and makes my phone bulky and ugly. It's rated at 3800mAh so I was hoping it would measure at least at half that, it measured in at 1725mAh, what a joke.

Sure 1450mAh on my phone is enough for 4-5 days if I only use it for calls but who uses a smartphone purely for calls? The GPS drains the crap out of the battery, the 1725mAh one gets drained 1% for roughly 90 seconds and that's with 3G and Wifi off. At best it only lasts a few hours when used for anything that requires the screen to remain on. Roughly 5 hours 720p video playback at my settings.

If I leave the typical things on, GPS, Wifi, 3G, etc, the battery would barely last long enough to watch a movie.

I'm waiting on one with a ~5.5" 720p high quality IPS (no more Super AMOLED for me), 2GB RAM, a battery that's actually over 3000mAh in reality, a GPU that's not pathetic, and an SD card slot. Preferably with at least 64GB internal storage, even 64GB seems like a joke.

Edit: Argh, double post, forgot to merge this into my old post. A mod please do so if you have a moment.
