Nvidia announced the GeForce 800M top to bottom line-up of new notebook GPUs. They deliver the usually double digit jumps in performance of 30%, 40% and in some cases even 60% year on year. And we have again unseated ourselves for “world’s fastest notebook GPU” crown. But let’s be honest, these kinds of performance increases come with each new generation of notebook GPU.
This year has something different. This year, we are changing the way we define progress for gaming notebooks. Not only are we bringing faster GPUs to the table, we are also introducing a whole new set of killer features designed specifically for notebook gamers.
The GeForce GTX 880 has 1536 stream processors, up to 4GB GDDR5 memory, a 256-bit memory bus, 954MHz base clock and 5000MHz memory, whereas the GTX 870M has 1344 stream processors, up to 3GB GDDR5 on a 192-bit memory bus, 941MHz core and 5000MHz memory.
The Kepler-based GTX 860M has 1152 cores and a 797MHz clockspeed whereas the Maxwell-based variant has 640 cores clocked at 1029MHz. Both models feature up to 2GB GDDR5 memory, a 128-bit memory bus and 5000MHz memory clockspeed. The Maxwell-based version should be the most power-efficient but it's unclear which of the two has the best raw performance. The GTX 850M, this Maxwell based part features 640 cores clocked at 876MHz, a 128-bit memory bus and up to 2GB GDDR5 clocked at 5000MHz.

The biggest is NVIDIA Battery Boost, which will untether notebook gamers from their wall sockets for the first time. NVIDIA Battery Boost gives you up to 2x the gaming battery life, automatically. It works by operating the notebook in a whole new, and incredibly efficient way. Instead of your notebook pushing every component to its max, Battery Boost guarantees a user defined frame rate, such as 30 FPS. The driver level governor takes over from there, and operates all your system components including CPU, GPU, & memory at peak efficiency. All while maintaining a smooth & perfectly playable experience. Battery Boost joins the award-winning NVIDIA Optimus technology to extend battery life to the max.
The highly-praised GeForce ShadowPlay is also coming to notebooks with this launch. ShadowPlay is a new feature in GeForce Experience that lets you capture high-quality in-game footage or broadcast your gaming exploits to Twitch.TV, all with virtual no performance impact. ShadowPlay has three modes: Shadow Mode, Manual Mode and a Shadow + Manual combined mode.
We are also adding notebook support for GameStream to enable smooth streaming of PC games over WiFi to a GameStream enabled device, like NVIDIA SHIELD.
ShadowPlay and Game Streaming are cool gaming features that are also ushered in by the new GeForce 800M GPU launch. But we did not forget about existing GeForce customers. In late March notebook users will be able to update their GeForce Experience software to enable these features on their notebook. All GeForce GTX 700M and GeForce GTX 680M, 675MX, 670MX and GTX 660M GPUs also support ShadowPlay and GameStream.
This new line up does not sacrifice frame rates for power efficiency. GeForce 800M are even more power efficient that our previous generation of notebook GPUs by a good margin. We are helping our partners pack more and more power into thinner and thinner notebooks. The Gigabyte P35R, Lenovo Y50, MSI GS 60, MSI GS 70 and Razer Blade are all good examples of thin and light (and insanely powerful), GeForce GTX-equipped gaming machines.
Those looking to play on the world’s fastest notebooks should consider power-packed systems such as the Alienware 17, Asus G750JZ, MSI GT 70, and MSI GT 60 which can all be had with a GeForce GTX 880M under the hood.
