You can play by yourself. Plenty of people are quite successful without ever joining a corporation.

Lol, gotta hand it to CCP the trailers are great shame the game is about 2 maybe 3% as a exciting as that bit at the end of the trailer where the guy says 'EVE ONLINE' and the title flashes up.
