Christmas Pun - Jen-Hsun Huang will become new Intel CEO - NV merges with Intel

Posted by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 12/14/2012 01:35 PM | 28 comment(s) ]

A new crazy rumor that Intel and NVIDIA are in talks about future developments, cross licensing and potentially even a merger between the two companies. Last decade both Intel and AMD tried to acquire NVIDIA, but these acquisition talks failed because Huang insisted on becoming the CEO of the new entity. With Intel CEO Paul Otellini retiring in May, some Intel board members reportedly feel that the chip giant needs an outsider with a fresh perspective, and perhaps Huang is just the right man with the vision to propel Intel into the future.

This time around, our sources have said that Intel did not categorically say no to one of requirements, should Nvidia be acquired - and that is that the CEO of Nvidia and the senior management take over the respectable roles in the new entity, regardless of the entity size. Remember that this requirement sunk the finalization of Nvidia-AMD tie up in 2005, which in turn ended with AMD paying $5.9 billion for ATI Technologies.

Bear in mind that Intel's BoD announced that for the first time in history, the company is considering an external person for the role of CEO, as the investors feel that the company hasn't done enough in the mobile segment. Naturally, investors in general don't have a clue how semiconductor companies work and make profit, since for every smartphone there is a high revenue chip that delivers the service - but the Street wants to see companies battling for pennies on the dollar. As the old credo goes - What The Street wants, The Street Gets - and Intel is now entering the pennies (SoC) versus dollar (Enterprise CPUs) market in terms of profits.

I really don“t see this happening...

Specially when Intel has enough money to simply buy Nvidia.

I really doubt this. It is too unlikely in my opinion.

Someone have think we was the 1st April when he have woke up this morning ?
( or maybe with 2012 end of the world, we will maybe never seen the next 1st April lol ))

If Intel want a new CEO, i doubt this will include the obligation to merge with a company as Nvidia..

Its absolutely not in the interest of Intel to do it. ( or for Nvidia consumers ).

( + I m not sure Nvidia can merge with anyone, because the protection deal / contract with MS who make they take the control of Nvidia immediately ( 51% of titles reserved) in case of any sold or merge of the company )

Either most of you are being sarcastic, or are genuinely this short-sighted.

If this does happen, it is so far from a good thing that it might as well be in another universe.

Basically, you'll end up with a duopoly in both CPU AND GPU segments, where you will get less and less value for what you pay for.

The whole idea is to keep competition alive to keep them trying to outdo each other. The only real competition Intel has right now are from ARM CPUs but they don't compete with Intel in the segment that I personally find most important to me: x86 CPUs.

This (like already said) - a dream come true!

Such development will be awesome! And the resulting company - best placed to produce ground-braking tech and devices.

I don't know how much truth is in this news, but I'll keep my fingers crossed till at least other major developments!

That would be nightmarish, I hope it never happens. What would nvidia even gain? They're doing fine in mobile, enterprise and GPGPU while intel is struggling.

was thinking the same thing.
How is this a good thing to be a dream ? Rather, nightmare.
Flexibility of mid and low budget pc market would be totally collapsed.

.

Again, Intel will not merge with nvidia because they search a new CEO lol.. i dont know from where come this rumor (Some bank investor have surely not get enough money from his Intel and Nvidia shares this year and want a little bonus before the end of the year.. ) And specially not in the hand of the CEO of Nvidia. ( lol Intel in the hand of Nvidia, what a joke.. lol better to say intel will be sold to nvidia as say like this this will be exactly the result ( so 100% impossible ) . I can tell you otellini will better come back as CEO instead of seeing this.

In the worst case, if Intel was buy/merge with Nvidia ( if MS and the USA FTC was allright with it because they are too opponent on many sector ),
I dont know what will happend to Nvidia and their product, it could well be the end of what it is now.
