Nvidia on External Graphics Accelerators
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, February 9, 2010 - 8:56 PM

Guru3D.com ImageMuch like ATI's external XGP solutions (Guru3D review here) NVIDIA now seems to show an interest as well. In a recent interview with xbitlabs an executive from Nvidia Corp. said that it considers external graphics adapters for notebooks a big opportunity even though the company does not offer such products at the moment.

“I think it is a big opportunity. We have two strategies at Nvidia: one is to put graphics everywhere, the other one is to [find more ways to] integrate discrete chips into the box. I think there is definitely a place for [external graphics cards for notebooks], no question. We continue to look at whether this is a GPU [docking stations] or external devices,” said Rene Haas, general manager of the notebook GPU business at Nvidia, in a brief interview with X-bit labs.

There are a lot of notebooks featuring high-performance microprocessors, but there are much less notebooks with high-performance graphics processors since discrete graphics chips increase the size and weight of mobile computers rather tangibly and are not needed crucially. A way to add high-performance graphics to laptops was introduced by ATI in 2008: external graphics cards and external graphics port (XGP) technology. Unfortunately, so far such graphics cards have hardly become widespread; in fact, there is only one XGP graphis solution available: Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Graphics Booster powered by ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 that can be plugged to Fujitsu Siemens Amilo SA3650 or Acer Aspire Ferrari One. One of the issues, believes Nvidia, is the price of such graphics solutions.

“I think, the issue that has to be solved for something like that is the right price-point that hits the right segment. There is definitely a lot of interest in it and [this is] something we are keeping our eye on to be able to offer something there,” said Mr. Haas.

Unfortunately, Nvidia does not reveal any concrete plans on the matter and it is unclear when the company could introduce its own external graphics technology for notebooks. As a result, the only thing for sure is that Nvidia is keeping an eye on such market opportunity.

“This is my opinion, I cannot say much about our plans,” added general manager of the notebook GPU business at Nvidia.

Matrox updates Multi-Monitor Display Solution
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, January 29, 2010 - 4:31 PM

Feeling some serious heat from ATI's Eyefinity feature Matrox decided to release a new Multi-Monitor Display Solution. The multiple DualHead2Go and TripleHead2Go Graphics eXpansion Module (GXM) brings support to drive up to four or six monitors, respectively, from a single system.

Matrox's solve  .. well .. a second GXM can now be connected to the secondary output of a supported dual monitor graphics card so two DualHead2Go GXMs can power up to four outputs in 2x2 or 4x1 modes, while two TripleHead2Go units can be combined to connect six displays to produce either a 3x2 or 6x1 set up.

Matrox currently offers multi-GXM support with the 2.06 (or above) GXM software suite. A maximum of two GXMs—of the same make and model—can be connected to a supported graphics card with two available outputs of the required type. Multi-GXM stretched desktop mode is available with Matrox M-Series cards, while independent desktop support is available with supported M-Series, ATI, and NVIDIA graphics cards. For complete details, visit the Multi-GXM page. Matrox partners will be showcasing this technology, alongside a wide range of Matrox digital signage graphics solutions, at Integrated Systems Europe 2010, RAI, Netherlands, from February 2-4.

Issue Delays AMD HD 5830 Launch
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, January 28, 2010 - 8:14 PM

Guru3D.com ImageWhile here at Guru3D we don't know any better than the official release would have been in February, Digitimes reports that according to their sources, AMD encountered a last-minute issue with the upcoming Radeon HD 5830 graphics card just when it was doing the final validation process. According to Digitimes, the company was intent on officially launching the new product on January 25th. Now, however, it seems that the HD 5830 won't make it to the shelves before February.

The Radeon HD 5830 is meant to cover the gap between the HD 5770 and Radeon HD 5850 GPU-based DirectX 11 graphics cards. Currently, the company's only offering for that price segment is the HD 4890, which lacks DirectX 11 features and is already facing strong competition from the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 200 series.

HIS Radeon HD 5670 ICEQ review
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, January 25, 2010 - 9:47 PM

HIS Radeon HD 5670 ICEQ review

HIS Radeon HD 5670 ICEQThe one thing we mentioned in the reference review however was the fact that the reference product is a tiny bit too audible for a HTPC (well at least for me .. I'm totally anal like that). So I was already expecting ATI's partners to release a product with custom cooling to keep them noise levels down a notch further.

Of course the minute when that popped into my mind I already received an email from the guys at HIS, asking us to review the Radeon HD 5670 equipped with their classic ICEQ cooler. And that equals completely silent noise levels versus good cooling at a fair price.

Let's check out the review, right here.

MSI Radeon HD 5870 Lightning PCB photo's
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, January 22, 2010 - 11:07 PM

The weirdest emails sometimes arrive at Guru3D. We received a series of photo's anonymous thorugh email, these photo's are showing the R5870 Lightning from MSI all stripped down nekked. In the past we already tested MSI's GeForce GTX 265 and 275 and where impressed. MSI is making a move towards the Radeon series now as well.

Two 8-pin PCI-Express power connectors for maximum power delivery. Voltage measuring points for the GPU voltages - little LEDs for showing active rails, quality caps and chokes .. very nice. Check it out.

No specs available, just some photo's ... (click thumbnails)

Galaxy dual-GPU GeForce GTS 250 card
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, January 21, 2010 - 9:30 PM

Galaxy always designs a dual-GPU board every now and then. Then they a press-release and a board for review to one or two media sites .. and then these dual-GPU cards are never to be heard from again. Marketing blizz folks -- brand recognition.

Anyways, Galaxy developed a dual-GPU graphics card with two GeForce GTS 250 GPUs. Basically, this model seems to be a spicy single-PCB version of the GeForce 9800 GX2 with lower power consumption.  The two GPUs are placed on a single PCB, and the Low Power edition G92-426 GPUs are expected to bring down the power draw. The graphics board also features one BR04 bridge chip and 16 pieces of 0.8ns DRAM chips. Each GPU is served by 1GB of memory and a 256-bit of memory interface.

The card features 6-phase power supply design and employs Bussmann choke which boasts up to 2MHz frequency.  Check out the thumbnails.
