Corsair Expands Storage Line with 512 GB SSD
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, February 4, 2010 - 3:19 AM

High-capacity SSDs are few in number due to the tremendous pricetage, none the less Corsair will intro a 512 GB Performance Series rather soon. Very little info is available just yet but it seems that the upcoming storage unit will get a phat 128MB cache memory and will use the 3.5-inch form factor. The device will be built with multi-level cell NAND Flash memory chips and will work on the SATA 3.0 Gbps interface. In addition, the product will come with an aluminum casing.

The read and write speeds of the drive are set at 200MB per second and 240MB per second, respectively. There's speculation that that the drive might not be built with any form of third-party PCB, so there is a chance that the SSD might turn out to be made up of two 256GB Performance Series drives in the RAID configuration. This possibility is suggested by the overall shape of the unit and the presence of two push buttons.

The upcoming Corsair Performance Series 512 SSD is mighty expensive at $1968 or 1400 Euro. We expect to see the unit at CeBIT trade show.

Zalman MS1000-HS2 Professional chassis review
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, February 3, 2010 - 10:06 PM

Zalman MS1000-HS2 Professional Chassis review

Zalman MS1000-HS2 reviewZalman recently released a new chassis onto the market called MS1000-HS2, a chassis targeted at the somewhat high-end professional end-user with a grasp for style, design and functionality. The chassis offers way more than standard features though, we see sound dampening, removable drive bays, optimized cooling at low noise levels and sure just offering very versatile chassis. Next to the stylish smooth lines and lack of weird curvatures in the design you'll also spot hot-swappable drives; no less than six removable HDDs can be installed in this HS2 model.

Check out the Guru3D review right here.

USB X-Ray Reader
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, February 3, 2010 - 10:00 PM

Oh dear .. well, what do you normally do with those X-Ray films that you get after going for an X-Ray scan? Most would just leave them to collect dust at home, but why not use a USB X-Ray Reader and scan them into your computer? Whether you want to share them with the rest of the world is up to you, but at least you won’t have to worry about losing the originals, right? It’ll set you back a good $145.69, so it’s probably not something you’d buy on a whim, unlike the usual USB junk - link

Samsung EcoGreen F3EG 2TB drives
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, February 3, 2010 - 9:53 PM

Samsung introduced a new Green-series hard disk with a storage capacity of 2TB. The 3.5" HDD uses four 500GB platters and should be available for around $180.

The EcoGreen™ F3EG, a higher capacity model from its predecessor the F2EG, features 2TB capacity with 500GB per disk that is capable of storing up to 880 hours of DVD video or 500,000 or more songs in MP3 format. With increased recording density, the EcoGreen F3 drive is more power efficient by supporting a capacity up to 2TB with four disks.

The F3EG utilizes Samsung’s EcoTriangleTM technology to provide eco-friendly components, low-power and low-noise operation technology to its ‘EcoGreen’ hard drives. Eliminating halogen compound and brominated flame retardant from the PCBA, the new model is produced with eco-friendly materials and meets all the environmental regulations including RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) which is being applied worldwide as well as the European Union.  Samsung’s new hard drive utilizes its low noise operation technology SilentSeek™ and NoiseGuard™ to achieve a quiet operation system.

In addition, with its advanced design and fewer components, the F3EG drive is 40 percent lower in power consumption in idle mode and 10 percent lower in reading/writing mode than competitive drives. The drive received a zero percent failure rate in the unstable voltage environment test. The EcoGreen™ Series has been selected as the best-in-class in the area of power consumption for two straight years by IDEMA Japan (International Disk Drive Equipment and Materials Association) in the performance comparison test of HDDs.

The F3EG incorporates a 3.0Gbps SATA interface, Native Command Queuing features and a 16MB/32MB buffer memory. The 3.5” F3EG drive is available in 1.5TB and 2TB capacities in the United States and EU markets with a MSRP of $179.99.

Enermax reveals new Modu82+, Pro82+ LibertyECO PSUs
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, February 3, 2010 - 6:50 PM

Enermax announced 2010 revisions of its Modu82+, Pro82+ and LibertyECO power supplies.
Enermax launches revisions of its most popular PSU series Modu82+, Pro82+ and LibertyECO. Users can identify the upgraded PSUs by looking for the "II" name affix. On the 20th anniversary of the Enermax brand, all PSUs in the Modu82+ II, Pro82+ II and LibertyECO II series will also be delivered with a special add-on: a 12cm Twister fan.

Modu82+, Pro82+ and LibertyECO belong currently to the most famous and popular PSU series on the market. With the PC demands of 2010, Enermax has now upgraded these three series with several new and attractive features.

DXXI Ready
In the face of the inevitable upgrade of many PC systems, gamers wanting high-performance DirectX11 graphics cards, require new demands of power. Enermax changed every single 6-pin PCI-Express connector to the upgraded 6+2-pin (8-pin) instead. All Enermax PSUs from 400W upwards possess at least two 6+2-pin (8-pin) PCI-Express connectors, which will be required for the new generation of DirectX11 graphics cards, coming on the market in 2010.

CordGuard
Everyone knows this possible situation, especially on LAN events or in crowded rooms: while sitting at the computer, someone stumbles over the AC power cord and your PC shuts off suddenly. Enermax has a remedy for this problem: a small, patented metal clip. By clamping the AC cord tightly to the PSU case, it avoids accidental shutdowns of the PC.

Extented CPU 12V Power Cable
In more and more PC cases, the power supply is installed at the bottom. As a consequence, the distance between PSU and CPU socket becomes longer, causing the 12V power cable to stretch. Therefore, Enermax has updated its PSUs by equipping all new series with 60cm CPU 12V cables. This gives users more flexibility in assembling their PC systems.

To celebrate its anniversary, Enermax will be bundling its PSUs with a free 120mm Twister case fan for a period of time. Among the models that are being upgraded are the 425W, 525W, 625W PRO82+ II, the 500W, 600W LibertyECO II, as well as the 625W MODU82+ II.

MSI to launch USB 3.0 and SATA 6G add-on cards
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, February 2, 2010 - 10:49 PM

Much like ECS, ASUS and other MSI will also be launching a series of SATA6G and USB 3.0 add-on cards.

The Star-USB3 (USB 3.0) expansion card will be powered by NEC USB 3.0 controller chip and delivers a new standard SuperSpeed USB 3.0 performance up to 5Gbps data-transfer rate which is 10 times faster than USB 2.0 and at least 900mA current output for each port to easily access real fast external devices.

Next to that MSI will launch a USB 3.0 and SATA 6G expansion card which provides a great flexibility with its backward compatibility to USB 2.0 and earlier devices and thus supports high-speed SATA3 devices.

The new 3.0 (SATA 6 Gbit/s) standard can support a maximum of roughly 715MB/s without the encoding overhead. While even the fastest conventional hard disk drives can barely saturate the original SATA 1.5 Gbit/s bandwidth, Solid State Disk drives have already saturated the SATA 3 Gbit/s limit at 250 MB/s net read speed.

Ten channels of fast flash can reach well over 500 MB/s with new drives, so a move from SATA 3 Gbit/s to SATA 6 Gbit/s would benefit the flash read speeds. As for the standard hard disks, the reads from their built-in DRAM cache will end up faster across the new interface.

Microsoft SideWinder X4 keyboard gets 26-key anti-ghosting
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, February 2, 2010 - 9:55 PM

Microsoft have outed their latest keyboard, and while the SideWinder X4 may not look all that distinctive compared to the rank and file of gaming ‘boards, it has a few tricks that could potentially improve your kill rate.  The company have enlisted the help of their Applied Sciences Group to instil the X4 with “the industry’s most advanced anti-ghosting technology”, which allows it to individually recognize up to 26 button presses at once.

That’s handy if you’re mashing keys like nobody’s business, trying to avoid being shot in the head (or trying to get the latest draft of your novel complete before your publisher sends round the heavies).  There are also recordable macros and switchable user profiles, together with adjustable key backlighting.

The Microsoft SideWinder X4 keyboard will arrive on shelves come March 2010, priced at $59.95.  Amazon will apparently start taking preorders later this week, and we imagine it won’t be the only keyboard with the anti-ghosting tech that we see from Microsoft in the near future.
