It should be clear that Project Scorpio has AMD under the hood and news reaches us that the new Xbox will offer support for FreeSync 2, but also HDMI 2.1.

Project Scorpio will be the most powerful console Microsoft has ever made. It will feature major upgrades like rendering games at 4K resolution with 60 frames per second, and play virtual reality games like a VR version of Fallout 4. It's also been said that the new console won't get any exclusive games. Instead it will run current Xbox One games.

HDMI 2.1 thus is supported and that adds variable refresh rates (VRR) in that new HDMI standard. That basically is adaptive sync, hence FreeSync and thus now FreeSync 2. FreeSync 2 adds support for HDR10. HDMI2.1 also will have more bandwidth available allowing 10-bit Ultra HD at 60 FPS, even up-to 120/144 Hz. But also 8K60, which  is 7680x4320 resolution at 60Hz. HDMI 2.1 it also supports 4K120, which entails either 4096x2160 (true 4K) or 3840x2160 (4K UHD) at 120Hz. For the sake of comparison, signals for those resolutions are limited to 60Hz in HDMI 2.0a.

Now it is not stated that Scorpio will support it but HDMI 2.1 also offers Dynamic HDR support.

Dynamic HDR is a rendering technique in which high dynamic range information is sent to the TV throughout a video frame by frame—and not just at the beginning, as HDR-10 handles it. This allows for finer control of brightness and color levels. Dolby Vision delivers Dynamic HDR via the current HDMI 2.0a spec.

The new HDMI spec requires a new 48-gigabit-per-second cable. That cable will also work with older HDMI 1.3 (10.2Gbps) and HDMI 2.0a (16Gbps) ports, but those ports don’t support the new HDMI 2.1 features.  HDMI 2.1 also adds support for the new object-oriented audio codecs—such as Dolby Atmos and DTS X—which can position audio events from movie soundtracks in 3D space.
