Over at CES NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang unveiled a new version of the Shield TV -- simply called Shield -- the new version will support 4K HDR for both games and movies.
Among other new features, the new Shield TV is also the first Android TV device to support Google Assistant. As you'd imagine, Google Assistant works just like it does on the company's Home device and Pixel phones, but you can also command it to play media on the Shield TV. The company also announced a companion microphone accessory for the Shield, NVIDIA Spot, which will function similarly to Amazon's Echo. Shield was already considered one of the better TV consoles available, but the upgrade to 4K and HDR (high-dynamic range) makes it even better. HDR provides deeper color and images.
NVIDIA didn't share much about the hardware powering the new Shield bugt we expect that the Shield is powered by the Tegra X1 processor. A model with 16GB of storage will ship later this month for US$199.99, and a Shield Pro model with 500GB storage will be available for $299.99. The models will include a controller and a remote.
In order to pick up your voice anywhere in your house, Nvidia has also developed a microphone called Spot. Several of the tiny black mics can be placed throughout your house, and Spot will configure and triangulate your location based on your voice.
Nvidia Shield can perform tasks such as turning on the coffee pot, searching for movies and TV shows for you to watch, and shutter your house if you're heading out for the day.
