NVIDIA today announces the GeForce GTX Titan, read carefully ANNOUNCES. In this article we preview the GeForce GTX Titan technology. The GeForce GTX Titan is NVIDIA's fastest single GPU based graphics card they have ever built. It is based on the GK110 GPU with 7.1 Billion transistors and as such is nearly as fast as one GeForce GTX 690 with two GTX 680 GPUs. Later on Thursday we may uncover the performance and we'll do just that with three cards and three monitors. But for now, have a peek at this technology preview.

You don't understand how business works.
Example: Your opponent launches new brand of beer. You make similar beer that is as good as theirs(or maybe a bit better) and you make one that is way better (and you think that will be your premium beer) before your opponent puts them on the market. Now when you see that your opponents best beer is equal to your medium one and is selling very good for fairly high price, you won't release it for less as in the long run your medium beer will make more money. And once you release your premium one it will make even more money. That's how business work.
This is how you don't compete with yourself and make money.
Holy crap that was the worst explanation I've ever read.

$999 bucks, yikes. looks freaken awsome though. that gpu 2.0 boost looks great. My only gripe about gk104 is the freaken throttling at a relatively low temp of 70c. gpu 1 runs about 68c to 72 max and it throttles down to 1228

Great card by the look of things, too expensive though as i never have and never will enjoy video games enough to spend that sort of money.
The refresh overclock sounds interesting, but as mentioned it sounds more miss than hit.
I'm still not convinced this was ever meant to be the GTX680, all the evidence points away from it.
It was nearly a year away from finished ready as a Tesla card when AMD brought out the 7970, so there was no chance it was ready as a gaming card.
Also Nvidia had spent the previous year or so beforehand going on and on about how power efficient Kepler and even moreso Maxwell was going to be, to bring out a hot and power hungry card, even one this fast just doen't fit.

So nvidia is selling their high end card for a grand now? If these sell well, one can expect Titan's next-gen successor to go for 1,500.

NV didn't wait. They begun selling $3,000+ K20x/K20 as soon as they filled the inventory.
PC and Gamers got their Gk104, corporate got their Tesla. Wafers are cheap, yields are not problem, TSMC capacity is still a problem. Otherwise NV would set the price at say $700 and sell them as soon as they make em.
$1000 price means they can't make as many Titans/K20x as they want to.

This card was supposed to be the GTX 680, there is no way anyone could convince me otherwise. Look at the chart/s HH put together showing the previous top tier cards then look where GK104 falls in. Aside from "MOAR CORES" it's utterly and completely out of place as the X80 part.
If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit.
Now if I could find a way to afford two of them I'd be set for life at 1080P

March 2012. Let's suppose Nvidia's yields are high enough to both be able to release GK104 and GK110. They release GK104 because it's enough to compete with AMD. They do so at a lower price. 7970 costs $550, 680 costs $500. "680 beats 7970, uses less power, costs less". Nvidia have a powerful chip gathering dust. They don't release it because: why would they sell a card that only a few people would buy for such a premium price? It's a loss? What about people who are running multi-monitor and can afford it? Weird.
Fast forward to Feb. 2013. The 7970 has gotten a GHz edition and such driver improvements it's practically a "refresh" of the 7970 released around one year ago. 7970, $400, 680, $500. Nvidia release Titan @$1000.
How is 2013 any different that 2012? They have a more expensive card, the 680, competing with the 7970, and a $1000 card, for premium buyers.
Why not release a hideously expensive Titan for $2000 in 2012 and simply sell their 680s like hotcakes, while maintaining their brand image and selling the $2000 Titan to those who can buy it?
If GK110 was ready back then, they'd have been selling it, plain and simple.
They're not competing with themselves. Any company should know how to avoid just that. It's an invalid assumption.
