Microsoft to drop ‘Metro’ Branding

Microsoft has notified their developers not to use the ‘Metro’ name in any of their applications whether its for Windows 8 or Windows Phone, says a report published by the The Verge. Microsoft told developers to use ”New User Interface” to refer to the Metro designing. Some sources inside the industry have told that this is due to a dispute between Microsoft and a German company named Metro AG.



Both Metro AG and Microsoft didn’t comment about this story but Microsoft officials have been saying that, “We have used Metro style as a code name during the product development cycle across many of our product lines”. He further added, ”As we get closer to launch and transition from industry dialog to a broad consumer dialog we will use our commercial names”. Despite all this, some Microsoft officials have confirmed off the record that they are dropping ‘Metro’ naming.

Today, Microsoft sent an internal memo to their employees saying that they should immediately stop using the ‘Metro’ naming and that Windows team is working on a new name which will be announced by the end of this week.
