Microsoft Makes Office and Windows Rentals Legal

Despite people already renting, leasing, or outsourcing PCs with Microsoft Office or Windows installed (think Internet Cafes, hotels, for example), only since January 1, 2010 Microsoft changed its licensing terms for Windows and Microsoft Office in order to make this common practice legal. So far, "Microsoft license requirements for Windows and Office do not permit renting, leasing, or outsourcing the software to a third party.

As of January 1, 2010, Rental Rights license SKUs were added to the worldwide Microsoft Product List for Volume Licensing, Microsoft Product Use Rights (PUR) document, and Microsoft Volume Licensing price lists as additive licenses through the Microsoft Open License, Microsoft Select License, and Microsoft Select Plus agreements for the following products: Microsoft Office, Microsoft Windows."

By paying a one-time only fee (for each Windows PC or Office copy that is being rented out) you get a waiver of these licensing restrictions valid for the term of the underlying software license or the life of the PC.
