A lot of routers from the firm Belkin went offline last Tuesday, likely due to a bug in the router firmware. Belkin issued a statement that manually inserting DNS servers will get you back online. The precise cause is not yet known according to Belkin.

Amongst others through Twitter yesterday it rained complaints from Belkin router owners. The helpdesk in the USA got overloaded by the number of reported issues. Advised is to manually insert a DNS, like Google’s dns-servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Right now Belkin claims that the problem is solved and that routers should work again after a restart. Meanwhile they are still looking into the precise cause of the issues at hand. On Reddit it is speculated that an error in the recent firmware update is the problem, the router would be looking for heartbeat.belkin.com (without success) after which the DNS Deamons in the firmware get stuck.
