Technology embeds itself everywhere. Street lights which can alert the local council when they are broken or need replacing are to be installed in central London. Westminster Council will replace all 14,000 of its street lights with new 'smart' lights over four years.

It said the system will save £420,000-a-year in maintenance and energy bills following an initial £3.25m investment. The lights can be controlled using an iPad, even allowing engineers to adjust brightness at the touch of a button.
