Intel Devil’s Canyon can be used on the Z87 motherboard chipset

Intel Devil’s Canyon processors (K-series of the Haswell Refresh with improved heatspreader/TIM) will be announced very soon. I want to mentioned two things here. The first is that as of now the new K-model processors should see availability in the stores at the end of June, this is more or less confirmed. Secondly, there's this question that pops up on the web, will Intel Devil’s Canyon processor work on the Z87 platform ?

The short answer, yes they do. Technically there is no limitation. Thanks go out to our forums member Chispy for spotting this btw. So then:

  1. You'll need a microcode update for your motherboard though, so your motherboard manufacturer will need to release a new BIOS which you should upgrade to. Motherboard manufacturers already are actively testing Devil’s Canyon on hardware platforms with the chipset Intel Z87. Support for these processors will be implemented by updating the BIOS, and as such announced by them.
  2. Intel will need to give the thumbs up for this - as they probably would like to see Devils Canyon exlusive to the series 9 chipset.

So to recap, the hardware can do it for sure, but it remains in Intel's hands wether or not to actually OK this. But it looks like that the motherboards manufacturers will simply give support anyway. As here's why I wrote this story, ASUS did in fact already update their CPU Support list, and both i7-4790K and i5-4690K are compatible with H81 H87 B85 H87 Z87 motherboards you can check it out for yourself here. See two examples below:

Right now ASUS is the only one listing support, and as such it seems the are rebelling against Intel. Hey, their customers demand compatibility and why not ?

The i7-4790K has a stock multiplier of 44  and thus the CPU reaches a Boost clock of 4400 MHz (likely on all four cores). They have an improved heatspreader & thermal insulation material in that CPU package that is going to cool these processors much better once you pump extra volts in them.

The i7-4790K will launch with a clock speed of 4.00 GHz and a Turbo Boost frequency of 4.40 GHz.

The Core i5-4690K launches clock speed of 3.50 GHz, with Turbo Boost frequency of 3.90 GHz. According to new info it is expected that these CPUs would be capable of running at clock speeds of 5.00 GHz, on air-cooling.

The Pentium 20th Anniversary Edition / G3258  processor will feature an unlocked multiplier and be all about nostalgia on a modern CPU socket with tremendous OC potential.

Once we place  things into a table, we get a pretty decent overview of what you can expect in the upcoming weeks.
