Every Assassin's Creed game is based on places and events that actually occurred during a pivotal moment of human History. We aim to create a sense of place and time that provides the backdrop to an amazing Assassin's adventure fraught with peril and political intrigue. The setting for Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag is no different, but people tend to know more about the fictional myths of Pirates, than the actual facts. Contrary to popular belief, Pirates didn't drop out of the clear blue sky to become the scourge of the seven seas.

To introduce you to the true story behind the Golden Age of Piracy, we've launched "Under the Black Flag" a historical timeline on Tumblr. Explore the events that set the stage for Pirates to rule the seas in this week's chapter, 'Origins of the Golden Age.'

The conflict of the warring factions of Europe's leading powers played out in the waters of their holdings around the world. Privateers were sanctioned to conduct violent and brutal attacks on enemy ships to disrupt trade and thin the ranks of enemy fleets. Once peace was reached these privateers instantly became outlaws but their lust for fortune and plunder remained.

The wild, nearly lawless and verdant islands of the Caribbean, and the towering tall ships that ruled them present some of the most unique and exciting stories we’d ever encountered and we’re excited for you to experience this world first hand in Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag. Behind the tales you've heard, lurking in the shadows of history, the Assassins are always working to ensure that people live free. For a time, that belief aligned with those who plied the seas from Kingston to Nassau. Let us reveal the truth of the Origins of the Golden Age of Pirates.
