So the fun part, that was a test as Wifi provider Purple simply added some rules to their terms and conditions when connecting to an open Wifi network. Purple added a ‘Community Service’ clause to their terms and services for two weeks and users could win a prize when they reported the questionable clause.

More than 22,000 people have agreed on thousands hours of cleaning toilets on festivals and events, hugging stray cats and dogs, removing chewing gum from the streets and many other tasks in exchange for free Wifi.

Only one user appears to be so smart to read the terms and conditions, he discovered the clause. According to Purple the experiment shows that users should read the terms and conditions before they connect to an open Wifi network, so they know what they agree on, e.g. on what data they share and what they allow providers to do with their data.

And no, the 22,000 users who agreed on the ‘Community Service’ clause don’t really have to do the work, Purple writes.
