ASMedia Technology has started developing 10Gbps (1250 MB/s) USB 3.5 host and device controller chips with availability scheduled for 2014, according to company president Chewei Lin. With transmission speeds comparable to those of Thunderbolt, but available at more affordable prices, USB 3.5 controller chips will have more opportunities in the market, especially for SSD applications, Lin stated.

Meanwhile, ASMedia's third-generation USB 3.0 to SATA chip, the ASM1153, has been verified by USB-IF, and the company will begin delivering samples to clients in the third quarter with volume shipments slated for the fourth, said the company. The ASM1153 is manufacturing at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) using an 85nm process.

ASMedia has also landed more orders for its USB 3.0 hub controller chips from most motherboard makers, buoyed by Intel Haswell CPUs, said the company, adding that it expects its shipments of USB 3.0 hub controllers to reach over 100,000 units a month in the third quarter.

PC related chips, including PCI Express and switch chips, currently account for 60-65% of ASMedia's total sales, while USB 3.0 controller devices make up 35-40%.
