From Dusk Till Dawn -
Interview
|
In your opinion, what makes the biggest difference between action and horror
in video gaming?
It’s
a question of P.O.V, story…. I think it’s the same for movies. Die Hard is a
good action movie but has a weak horror picture. Now imagine the Nakatomi tower
was built on a very old Indian Cemetery… Terrorists arrive and take hostages…
One of them bleed and the blood drops on an old Indian stone… Suddenly a doomed
spirit awakes and possesses the terrorists & John Mclean (spelling?) has to wack
them or they will sacrifice his wife for calling Cthulhu. You can do the same
with other stories: Home Alone, Mr. Bean go to Hollywood, MI2… Mainly the
survival horror speaks about what happens after death (obviously nothing very
funny). The genre implies occult, thrills, and fear… Something very powerful and
cruel you have to face, understand, confront and defeat. Action represents an
important part of the gameplay but horror is not here to be just a “cosmetic”…
Horror structures the story, characterize the ambience, enhance the emotions,
authorize spectacular F.X and more than that, transform the perception of the
universe you interact, because everything could happen.
FDTD's plot is unusually dark for a PC game. Did you have any trouble finding
publishers for it?
No…
It was one of the starting conditions and I don’t think it’s so dark as you said
(see the T.V serial OZ, for instance…). So the movie is violent, exciting, dark,
extreme… We really wanted to develop a game with these features.
Which 3D card do you feel will provide the best experience for your game?
I
think that Geforce 2 and ATI’s Radeon are the best compromise between price and
quality. We also use a Matrox G400 that is not so bad. We are very impatient to
test it on the new Matrox.
What new technology do you think will be the most important in 3D video game
development in the next year? In five years?
First
of all, we don’t have enough input from the hardware manufacturers in terms of
roadmap. Information is so confidential today. But we can barely imagine that in
the next few years the set top box (e.g. X-Box++) will become unavoidable. And
that these boxes will have the ability to be upgradable. PDA’s will have their
chance as well (I include the Advance Gameboy even if it is considered as a toy
today).
